According to the lunchlady food pyramid, the "tidbit" is a food group of its own.
And who can blame them? Can you imagine anything more divine than a carefully prepared fruit cocktail with tidbits? (Especially if you get the slimy pink cherry on your tray.)
So join with me in saluting that grandpappy of all gourmet dishes, the Incredible Tidbit.

Is that kind of like garnish? Although I doubt a slimy cherry would be particularly decorative, it does add color to the plate. My father is especially fond of eating decorative items on plates in fancy restaurants. Sigh.
