Feds Stepping Up Obscenity Prosecutions.

quote:
The 65-year-old former schoolteacher had little reason to believe he could get in trouble. He was selling tapes to adults who wanted them...
quote:
"Enforcement is absolutely necessary if we are going to protect citizens from unwanted exposure to obscene materials," Gonzales recently told federal prosecutors.
The type of tapes being sold are reprehensible to me, and I am torn on what (if at all) the gov. should do about it, but doesn't Gonzales's rationalization seem a little flawed?

Yes, his rationalization is flawed.

I happen to be fairly conservative politically, and I'm a christian, AND I don't believe these types of morality laws are right. Freedom means people can do something even if you don't like it, if it is not infringing on your own personal rights--and your rights don't include being able to avoid the discomfort of knowing that somewhere somebody is doing something you disapprove of. Deal with it.

I'm getting really tired of the religious right in this country. (Don't get me wrong, I've been tired of the liberals for much longer than that.)

I think I'm just disgusted with everybody.

How come Republicans (I am in Ind. who leans towards conservatism) do not let market-forces determine morality?

We have the feds cracking down on adult entertainment, and now I just read Texas targets sexy cheerleading.

I can understand the concern of parents, but if the cheerleading is too vulgar, stop supporting sports.
quote:
One of the co-authors of the bill, Republican Corbin Van Arsdale, said many parents want restrictions because they go to games to see young men clashing on the pitch, not girls shaking their behinds on the sidelines.

"You've got children seeing things that their parents would rather them not see," AFP quoted Mr Van Arsdale as saying.

If the girls are a problem and parents stop going and make their voices heard, then school administration will respond. Sports is a great source of income for some schools.

Do we really need authorities to police the Dallas Cowboys...or even highschool?

Conservatives are enjoying a backlash against (real or perceived) liberal attacks on traditional values. What will happen when the pendulum swings back? I am getting creeped out by the moral policing that seems to be taking place. I heard cable TV is next in line of the FCC. [Angst]

This is why I can't be a Republican. "We are in favor of smaller less intrusive government except in the case of ________,or__________etc."

I am a religious person but I believe that the government has no business deciding what "traditional values" are.

The problem with "traditional Values" is not who chooses the values, but who chooses the tradition.

Like everyone else who has responded this type of thing disgusts me, both the material and the prosecution. But I do wonder if the bestiality was simulated or not. The article was not clear on that. If it was real then good riddance, get the jerk on anything they can. That should be no more legal than child pornography.

"Some of them are just downright vulgar, something you would see at an adult club or something," Joe Deshotel, a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, told AFP news agency.
A Democratic member?? Has the world gone mad???

This is what they are against. Having teen girls simulating sex acts with each other in front of a crowd while wearing skimpy outfits. That is not cheerleading.

personally, I see nothing wrong with busting them. I'm fairly sure bestiality is not legal. Since an animal can hardly "consent" I would think sex acts with them would be illegal. In addition, the article said there was simulated rape. While it was evidentially fake, I still think that has gone over what is decent. You are still encouraging the act of rape. I think this goes far being conservative/liberal ideology. You don't have to be a conservative Christian to think that rape is a bad thing. This is not going after normal porn, it is going after clearly deviant sex (I think most people would agree sex that is not between consenting adults is deviant).

I don't know what the laws are like where this guy was arrested, but I seem to remember hearing somewhere that bestiality was not against the law in all states. I can't check because I'm on a work computer and it just wouldn't be appropriate, but my point is; t
This guy should only be prosecuted if he broke a law. Simulating an act of murder can't be prosecuted as murder, so why should simulated rape? I think that we should leave this to consenting adults, and mind our own business.

well, bestiality is not between consenting adults, since animals cannot consent, nor is rape...since by definition one party is not consenting. While the article says that the rape was 'simulated' is is still pretending to be non consentual. On a similar note, you can be arrested for selling something that you claim is a drug, even if it is not really a drug. Someone from my high school was got in trouble for this. It wasn't the same as a normal drug charge...but it was still illegal (just as these people are not be arrested for rape...but for obscenity).

This is not the same as selling someone bunk X or calling catnip pot. The consumers know that the rape is simulated. The vendors of "100% legal smoking mix" and the like are generally not prosecuted because they are not representing the product as marijuana. Same for herbal ecstasy.

Lupus,
The consenting adults who purchase or manufacture movies that involve simulated rape should not be tried unelss you would also like to prosecute all hollywood movie studios that have simulated murder, rape, drug dealing, etc. in their movies.

The bestiality is another issue, as it revolves around three points:

1. Is it illegal in Montana?

I still don't know the answer to this.

2. Was it simulated?

Again, don't know about this.

3. Can an animal consent?

The issue of consent does not exist for animals. If it did, I'm sure that no dog or cat would ever be neutered. Even barring consent, does anyone think animals are being harmed by these actions? Can it be proven in a court of law?

Lupus- What about women and men who enjoy bondage sex within their own home, with both adults consenting? Do you think they should also be prosecuted?

no

What is shown in those type of movies is different from what is shown in hollywood movies. You can have different levels of behavior. Some movies that have people being killed are PG, some are PG-13, and some are rated R. Some movies that have sex are rated PG-13 (though they don't show the nudity), some are R, and some are NC-17. I think you also have some that go beyond what should be sold...which is what this guy was arrested for.

*edit* as for whether it is legal in Montana, I don't know...since a google search would require sifting through pages of results with that crap, I am not going to look it up.

A few months ago I read that agents in the FBI's White Collar Crime division were being reassigned to run up leads on terrorist activities. This despite the President's promise to stop the greedy corporate thieves that did more damage to our economy in 2001's corporate scandals than Al Queda did with its attack.

Its nice to know that while we don't have the people to check and make sure Boeing isn't bribing its way into the pentagon, we have the people to arrest porn profiteers.
