That sounds unbelievable.

I might have to road trip up there just to check it out.

There's a theater in Daytona Beach that has a deal with the sandwich/ice cream shop next door. Anything you buy in that shop can be taken into the theater. VERY nice change of pace, and a lot cheaper to grab a bottle of Coke and a hot dog there.

There is a movie theater in a mall in SLC that allows you to bring in anything from the food court; they also have trays that you can flip up and put your food on.

Chris, another great idea that people overseas are doing (I think it's the Netherlands) is installing cell phone jammers. This is illegal here (stupid FCC) but I think this would help a ton.
Problem with this: on-call doctors, nurses, ministers, other professionals who actually do turn their cell phones to silent and take it outside if it goes off, but need to know if someone calls them.

Yeah, I always take my cell phone to the theater in case whoever is watching the kids needs to call me. I put it on silent, and if it rings I get up and walk outside the theater to talk.

That's true, but where do you draw the line? On-call doctors are the only profession that needs their cell phone with them in the movie theater.

Everyone else, I say let them make do. People have been going to the movies since the 30s, and they managed to live full and happy lives without cellphones.

JonBoy-- I don't know. I got the information from my sister and brother in law.

But it's a frickin' good idea.

Not true. As I said, nurses, ministers, firefighters, etc. Also, for people who have kids, as Belle said, it's very comforting to be able to be reached in an emergency. And there are all kinds of other circumstances I can think of that it would be really important to answer your cell phone while at the movies in.

The problem isn't cell phones at the movies, it's people who are inconsiderate in their use of them.

Comforting, not necessary.

Nurses, ministers, firefighters most emphatically do not need cellphones in the movie theater.

And now that I think about it, even on call doctors have pagers. Pagers operate on a different network than cellphones, and could still work even if jammers were in place. That would probably some tweaking and wouldn't be worth it, but hey, we're spitballing here, right.

If you can't disconnect for two hours, then you don't need to ever leave your kids. It's healthy for both kids and parents to be separate once in a while. Hire a trustworthy babysitter, and if there truly is an emergency, they can call the theater.

It's such a hassle that it eliminates useless phone calls, which are the ones that destroy everyone's moviegoing experience.

I'm not begrudging the "my brother was in a car accident" phone calls. But I do have a problem with the "hey man, what you doing later" and the "mom, I don't like purple skittles" phone calls. And I think we know which of those are more prevalent.

So you think it's better to have a theater employee walk into the middle of the movie and start calling out for Mr. and Mrs. So-and-so?

Even if everyone and their dog has a cell phone in the theater, there is such a thing as the vibrate setting. It rings, you feel it, no on hears it, and you inconvenience a few people by leaving the theater to return the call. It's inconsiderate to simply not turn the ringer off, even when you're reminded repeatedly at the beginning of the movie.

No. I thought it was pretty apparent that the idea was to minimize the interruptions by making the patrons a little less accessible. That way, when it happens, you know it's for something crucial.

Narnia,
I agree that if everyone would use the vibrate setting the world would be a happier place. But phones ringing aren't even the worst. Here in Louisiana, I've noticed that about a third of the people actually answer the call and have a conversation, all without leaving their seat. That drives me crazy.

I live in Austin and pretty much go to the Drafthouse for everything. Aren't the tickets fairly cheaper, too, since the majority of the money they make is off of the food they serve you?

Why do theaters not escort people out who talk on cell phones? I remember when I was growing up, ushers would come by and ask people to be quiet, get their feet off the seats, etc.

Because it would cause the movie to come to a screeching halt when the guilty party denied loudly and at length that they had done anything wrong. Bob knows I wish there was something that could be done to the offending bastards, though.

Yeah, but you catch them in the act, and if they cause a scene, you escort them out. It's private property and you can ask anyone to leave at any time, pretty much.

Ah. Now I understand your motives. I've never seen that kind of behavior here in Utah. I think everybody would yell at them to shut up.

I'd like to point out that when firefighters are "on call" they are in the firehouse. That's the whole purpose of the 24-hour shift. The rest of the week, they do whatever they want. Two day work week. Hmm. I wonder why it's so hard to get into that profession? [Razz]

PC, some places only have volunteer firefighters, and no one lives in the firehouse.

Having the phone on vibrate and getting up and leaving to answer it if it rings is what I meant by "considerate use" of a cell phone. Read the rest of my post.

Yeah, but not by all that much. For example, the Lake Creek Drafthouse has matinee showings for $6, while the Gateway Regal Cinema has a $6.75 matinee. Not incredibly cheaper, but still cheaper.

My main draw to the Drafthouse is the lack of children, and the XXX/Apocolypse Now! Hot Chicken Wings.

Thems wings are mighty tasty.

A. It's not a two-day workweek, it's every third day. So you work Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday one week, then Tuesday-Friday-Monday, then Thursday-Sunday-Wednesday.

B. Note the weekend days you have to work. And, if a hoiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving falls on your shift, the fire department isn't closed.

C. They don't "do whatever they want" on the other days, most firefighters I know, I mean the vast majority, have a 2nd job they work during the weekdays they're not at the station, because it's difficult to support a family on a firefighter's salary alone. Many ambulance services are staffed by off-duty firemedics, and bunches of them, like my husband, work in construction and contracting.

Not that this has anything at all to do with the thread, I just wanted to clear up any misconceptions.

Dude that is so useful for me... For a story I am writing in which one of the characters is a werewolf and a firefighter.

How do you type out that cat noise? Rawr!

No, that can't be right.

I'm not sure what part of your post I'm being accused of disregarding, but I read it. And the one before it. And the one before that. Then I took a nap (tired from reading).

I read every post in any thread I post in (which I why I'm conspicuously absent from the lyric thread and the last post thread).
