Strange days indeed. To keep this family friendly, I will not post full names or movie names, but my mind still can't wrap itself around the thought.

My brother and I were watching “Avatar the Last Air-Bender” on the cartoon network (great show btw). When we surfed the tv during commercials, we came across “True Lies” and my bro said, "You know Tia [that Japanese girl who has been in several movies, including Wayne' World] has a sister who is a porn star"

I, of course, have never heard of her. He couldn't remember her name, and that was really bothering him. We did a quick search on the Internet. We found her, and we found out she is not Tia's real sister--different last name spelling.

It also said she lived in my very own little Mormon town in Southern Utah. Out of all the places to live in the world, she is my neighbor!!! Well, I don't know where her house is right next to mine, but still...it's a small Utah town. We are all neighbors!

We went to her website (apparently she is some Mensa academic geek who built her own website), and sure enough, some of her family pictures are taken at spots I know all too well.

Apparently she has been in 200+ movies, but the movie that got my attention is The Big Lebowski. She was one of the girls in the short porn scene where the 2 girls called the plumber.
quote:
"You can only imagine what happens next."

"He fixes the plumbing?"

Why is a porn star, who is in my favorite movie, living in my ultra conservative small town? I don't get it. My head hurts.

Anyway, it is a small world. I just thought this was ultra-strange.

I never heard of her till today, and I am not interested in her material.

We finished Avatar before we did the searching. Anyone else watch Avatar? I like cartoons better then adult entertainment.

People today rarely know who lives next door, let alone across the street or across town. And even if you do know your neighbors, you often don't really know your neighbors.

Wasn't there a Nathaniel Hawthorne story about a guy who went into a forbidden part of the woods only to see many of his neighbors and leaders of the town engaged in some sort of Satanic ritual?

We all live with misconceptions of one another, just as we all have our own secrets our friends would be surprised to learn. People often find that they don't even know the person they are married to, even after years together. Finding a porn star in a small Mormon town seems almost cliche to me rather than something mindblowing. [Wink]

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" isn't shown on the Cartoon Network...it's a Nickelodeon/Viacom show.

Just to interject a minor, off-topic detail. [Wink]

Karl -- that story was called, IIRC, Young Goodman Brown.

*shrug* Possibly she can be both a porn star and someone who enjoys a quiet suburban life at the same time, lem?

Hahahaha!

It took me a little to recall who you were talking about as I don't exactly try to recall porn star's names, and hers is one of the few I would recognize.

As you note, Asia Carrera isn't related to Tia Carrere (which is also a stage name, I think) at all, she just picked the stage name because it sounded good. In addition to being a (former) porn star, she's a huge computer and gamer geek, is a member of Mensa, and has played piano at Carnegie Hall. I'm familiar with her because of the computer geek aspect, which makes us run in some of the same circles.

Heck, here's a snippet of her bio on her site (and yes, its correct, as well as written by her, she does her own site though she lets it fall out of date a lot):

quote:
Geeky Academic Stuff - NJ spelling champ, National Mathematics League, Spanish National Honor Society, placed in National Geography, Language Arts, and Mathematics Olympiads.

Geeky Other Stuff - Played classical piano at Carnegie Hall at 13 & 14 (Ernesto Lecuona's 'Malaguena' and Bach's 13th Invention), taught Colloquial English at Tsuruga College in Japan at 16

Education - Attended performing arts high school (emphasis on instrumental music and visual arts), National Merit Scholarship Winner (for 1440 on SAT's), and Garden State Scholar (for nerdly grades). Attended Rutgers University on full academic scholarship, with a double-major in Business and Japanese.

Most Overpublicized Fact - Yes, I am a member of Mensa, the society for high I.Q. nerds

As for the computer geek aspect . . . well, here's a selection out of her computer section (there's a note at the top saying the current info is out of date, but this should show you what I mean about being a geek):

quote:
MY BUTTKICKER is an Athlon XP 1700+ with 256MB DDR-RAM, a GeForce3 video card and 90GB total drivespace.
- MY OTHER BABIES are a 1.4GHz Athlon, 1.2GHz Athlon, and 800 MHz Pentium 3, each with 256-512MB RAM and 20-60GB drives.

I haven't linked her site because it does contain nudity, but if you don't mind that sort of thing and would like to read some rather humorous ramblings, many of them about computers and/or being a porn star (she doesn't recommend it, ditto for breast implants), its easy enough to find given her name and a search engine.

Right now she's retired and has I believe just recently had a kid, which is likely why she's enjoying her location in your sleepy mormon town [Smile]

Yes, nerds; a computer geek porn star.

Now I know your minds are wandering to some situation where you by chance fall upon her in a game of CS, only to graciously let her give you head... shots... head shots....

Huh?

She may not recommend it, but she's never complained about what it did for her. She just advises extreme caution to anyone interested in the job. Here's her Wikipedia entry (contains suggestive but worksafe image).

She, personally, is bright, funny, and married to a nutrition guru. They just had a daughter she dotes on, Catalina, who had her own website from birth.

Her site also contains a hilarious and rather startling step-by-step pictorial demonstrating how she changes her cute normal self into a heavily-makeuped glamorous porn star. It's scary, almost like watching a Kabuki actor get ready.

Well, not to belabor the obvious, but perhaps she likes being close to her fans.

Actually, I believe she checked around to find the best place to raise a family, and chose Utah.

If you're suprised that a professional porn star lives in your town, just think of all the amateurs in your town that are filming as we speak...

I think she would make a good member of Hatrack. She is a geek, succesful, has rare life experiences, and is articulate. Her website is pretty fun/interesting to read.

My bad about thinking Avatar was on Cartoon Network. I don't have cable, so I get the channels confused. I can't wait till it comes out on DVD. It is funny, cool, and sometimes intense. Any other fans?

When you think about it, the porn industry must go through a lot of young women, who stick with it for maybe a year or two, or even just a single movie to see what it's like. They all have to end up somewhere.

"Avatar--the last wind-bender" is super cool! I would like to hear from more people who have seen it. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you stop and pay attention next time it is on.

The plot, tho not original, is pretty cool. There are 4 types of magic that manipulate the elements. If you can manipulate fire, you are a "fire-bender." If you can manipulate earth, you are an "earth bender." There is Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water.

100 years ago, the fire-benders declared war, and civil war broke out. There was always an Avatar that, even tho he/she was trained in one element, he/she had control over all elements and held the peace. When the fire benders declared war, they destroyed all the air-benders--except a 12 year old boy air-bender, who is the next Avatar.

He was frozen in a glacier, and 100 years later, 2 16 year olds find him and save him. He is the Avatar--destined to save the world, unite magic, and stop a meteor--or something.

But he is just a kid who wants to have fun.

At times the shows fighting is some of the best anime I have seen, but more then that it is very lighthearted and VERY FUNNY. I hope it continues next year.

The first (current season) is called "Book One: Water." Right now he is just learning about water bending and avoiding the fire benders who are out to kill him. I guess that means there will be four seasons.
