I'm not much of a reviewer but I will say that if you're a guy go see History of Violence. It's pretty wicked.

The movie mainly had just a bunch of violence with the main character kicking a lot of ass and then when everyone was dead he had to go to the hospital since he took a wound every battle.

Lots of sex too, but for all you prudes out there, it was between a man and wife, perfect christian soft core porn. There was one sex scene where the wife dressed up as a cheerleader that seemed to really hit the spot (no not like that). It was weird it was sexual in a loving way, not sexual in a way to turn you on.

But, ya go see the movie. It's pretty good. It ends weird and I thought that the movie was only an hour long but found out that the movie went for about an hour and 50 minutes. So yeah. Good movie for guys.

I really wanted to see this movie. Badly.

Actually, I think there are a lot of movies out right now that I want to see.

Sounds like a movie I would really enjoy. Shows what you know. [Razz]

Whenever someone says a TV show or a movie is "for guys", I can't tell if they're insulting the show (by narrowing its audience) or insulting the guys (by narrowing their tastes) [Smile]

I kind of wonder the same, Puppy. And I feel left out, since I often enjoy these things too and, oh, I'm not a guy. [Smile]

Though in this case I think it's going to be a rental when it comes out.

Well there's not a lot of robots (limiting the guy movie feel) but there's a lot of violence (guy stuff!!!) and about 3 sex scenes (good for girls!)

Perhaps they're describing what they feel is a movie that would generally be enjoyed more by guys than by girls.

How about specifying the contents, and saying people that like this sort of thing will see it?

Broad generalizations only make broads mad.

Violence for men, sex for women. No wonder our society is what it is.

Seriously -- the opening post of this thread made me less interested in seeing it.

And I'm a guy.

Isn't that the one with Viggo? I think I understood you to say that he fights in this movie, and gets hurt.

But 'hurt' as in 'spattered artfully with blood' or, like, really beaten up?

Also, is he wearing a shirt the whole time?

Just, erm, curious...

Everyone seemed to automatically understand what precisely a "guy's movie" is, so I see nothing wrong with using it as a description.

If I call Harry Potter "children's literature" will there be this much bitching about generalisations?

Generalizations do serve some purpose, though I betthere are a few concerning the Irish that you might have cause to bitch about yourself. [Wink]

Now, back to Viggo's shirtlessness...

And if he does get shirtless, for how long is it? And it's not all facial close-ups, right?

There are generalisations about the Irish? I sure hope it has nothing to do with our severe problem with alcoholism, 'cause that just wouldn't be funny.

He keeps his shirt on in the trailer, and the one clip they have online... I guess I might have to wait for the dvd on this one.

I think that this movie is mostly concerned with subjects that men find more interesting than women. (That might be a better way to say it [Wink] )

For example, the nature of violence in all human relationships, and the violent nature of birth (and rebirth) I would think are topics more often associated with men. Not to say women would 't enjoy it, especially since Viggo DOES go shirtless (and a bit more...), but I would think that guys would get more out of this movie. And there is plenty to get, this a movie with a message and is well-made and well thought out - thought provoking and emotionally jarring.

I happen to like violence. Nyah. I'd say 'ask my husband' but I don't allow him to come to Hatrack. He might get Ideas.

So, more than shirtless... does he get owwies, too? I love to see handsome men get abused. *sigh*

Funny . . . the thread was posted saying it was really for very macho guys. And yet the most interest has come from women . . . and me.

*doesn't like action movies, but loves seeing guys with their shirts off*

You know, I didn't used to think Viggo was very attractive, but he's grown on me. I wouldn't object to seeing him shirtless. Or more. You know. That would be cool. [Cool]

I like Viggo because he's widely seen as a hottie, and yet he's exactly my age. So I consider him the poster child of all us elderly hotties. :-P

Joking aside, when I saw the preveiw on TV, I was interested. What people are capable of when their families are threatened is a subject of much interest to me, and the implication that the Viggo character might have been a violent man once adds a layer to that.

I found him sometimes appealing as Aragorn, and I acknowledge that he's a hottie. But it is generally younger men that I really find attractive, to be honest.

Still, this looks better to me than many a girl-buddy movie, or whatever else they usually market to people with ovaries.

It's an interesting little film but it reveals all that it has to say as soon as Ed Harris shows up. Him, the actress who plays the wife, and William Hurt all struck me as more capable actors than Vigo. I liked him as the junkie in Carlito's Way though. :/
