Weird. The ob/gyn who delivered all three of my kids changed practices/locations during each of my pregnancies except the last one (I guess she decided the far end of Santa Monica was far enough ). So, four different waiting rooms, with different mixes of patients waiting. Almost entirely pregnant women in each case.
And I almost never participated in or witnessed the kinds of conversations you're talking about. Strictly "Is this your first?/How many kids do you have?/How old are they?/Which doctor are you seeing?" conversations.
I can't even imagine sharing birth story details with someone I met 5 minutes before!

How long did you have to wait to see your ob/gyn?! Occasionally I had a long wait (and I always brought tests to grade or a book to read), but usually not more than 10-15 minutes before I was in a room.

It was a popular practice, with an experienced doctor, at a good hospital, that accepted Medicaid. One doctor, one RN, two secretaries, and a billing specialist. The doctor often had to run down and across the building to check on a patient in labor. Yeah, there was a wait sometimes. But it was worth it-- I loved him to pieces.

I just keep picturing it. Nice, quiet waiting room. After a few minutes, polite conversation about the kiddoes. Then some discussion about swelling and back pain. Then minor stories about pregnancy/delivery, then really gross highly detailed stories, while off in the corner poor kq is wishing harder and harder for a place to hide.

Yeah, that's pretty much it-- except last time, I was right there in the thick of it. Honestly, this time I probably will be, too; I tend to spill my entire life story to strangers pretty easily.
