I was reading articles on CNN.com and found this article. I went ahead and did a search and found this for my step-sister.

Wow...I think I just found $126 for me on that site. I'll have to check with my mom to see if she ever opened the account they're describing. I was a baby when I lived in CA.
That's pretty cool, Mama, congratulations to your step sis!

On a similar note, I once "found money" for my step-mother on the state of Kansas' unclaimed funds site (like the one you found), but she refused to go claim it! I was appalled. She said, "I'm still in the same place I've always been, where I have been for 30 years - so they should just send it to me". She refused to fill out the claim form. That really made me mad.

Huh. Indiana University owed me fifty bucks. Apparently it wound up as unclaimed property because two letters of my first name were transposed on the check, so they couldn't look me up. Cool!

Great - so now they disabled the "search the vault" site -- CNN must have caused too many hits

Using a geneology databse, i once found out that my great-uncle had passed away -- he lived in Hawaii and no one in the family was in contact with him. No one knew he had died!

Cool - Mama! Thanks for bringing this up! I went back to the site for the state of Kansas (just out of curiousity, because I had already checked it last year) and this year it shows more listings that affect my family -- including two for MY mom! I've already requested the claim forms be sent to her.
I looked over the NYS listings, and I think I found an account for my father, who is now deceased.
It has the same first name, last name, and middle intitial. It has a P.O. box in "central square" as the address, which is the town we lived in when I was a kid (and the town was quite small, so it would be a huge coincidence).
It says:
quote:Type of Property: MUTUAL FUNDS/DIVIDEND REINVEST BOOK SHRS Reported By: METLIFE INC Year Reported: 2003
I believe Metlife was who he had life-insurance from. Does this sound like some sort of 401K or other retirement plan?
Anyway, I need to contact my older brother and find out what our old address was.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention Dana!
Edit: and it doesn't say how much the account is worth for New York's.

Like many other sites, it will let you search for your name, etc., but won't give you the details of how MUCH they are talking about until you register and file a claim.
Also, someone with his same name and middle initial who lives/ed in a city I think he may have lived in is owed more than $300. I'm going to call him.

My deceased grandfather is also owed money, although I don't know who that would go to-- probably be spilt between my dad and his sibs.

Huh. Well, I found about a hundred dollars for my friend's parents, two myserious bank accounts for my late grandparents, and possibly some money for my late great-grandmother once I figure out what her exact street address was.
It's like treasure hunting, only without all the fun maps and shovels.

I could sure use some cash. The only person who owes me any money is a guy who lost a bet to me four years ago. He refuses to pay up and claims to have no memory of the bet.

I have been finding money all over the country. If you go to the site I linked to, it has links for all states. Many states can also be searched on missingmoney.com, which allows you to search all available states at once (but won't turn stuff up in every state, for example, CA.)

I found out a few weeks ago that the state of South Carolina owes me about $700. It should be ready for me to claim next week. Hooray for found money!

I found $10, plus a myserious one that says Over $50, but no details. The problem, I have to prove that I lived at the house. I was 7 at the time.

My husband's grandma is owed about $50 from 2 earthquake insurance policies or something ... but she died in 1995 ...
We need to let his brother know about this - the oldest son was executor of their mom's (the grandma's daughter) will (actually, there wasn't a will, and it was a huge mess, but that's another story).
