Yeah, I know CIV IV came out, but I actually just got CIV III from a friend who got CIV IV. However, I don't have the manual. Hence this question: how do I increase my gold? I keep on getting messages that my treasury is almost empty. Thanks!

Have you played through the tutorial? Doing so will probably answer your question, along with others you'll have.

Yeah, read the tutorials. But I have a big tip for you:
You get extra gold for every worked tile that has a road on it.
For example, when you start a city, there are 9 tiles to be worked. The center tile is the city, and it automatically produces 2 food, 1 shield, and 1 gold. As your population grows, you'll have citizens available to work other tiles. If there's a grassland tile, without a shield, it will produce 2 food by itself. With a road, it gains 1 gold. The same goes for other terrain types. Roads basically generate commerce in Civ III. Remember, rivers also give surrounding tiles an extra 1 gold bonus.
Again, build marketplaces, banks, and stock exchanges. Balance research, happiness, and the treasury. Posts: 1813 | Registered: Apr 2001

Also, make sure you build Wonders that will build free improvements for you. I also highly emphasize building Adam Smith's wonder, that saves a lot.

About marketplaces, banks, and devoting more workers to wealth:
It should be noted that having a higher population means you can put more workers to produce wealth. Since a marketplace adds 50% to your wealth, the difference between getting 2 wealth per turn and 10 wealth per turn without a marketplace is a difference of the market place earning 1 extra gold per turn versus 5.
There are two wonders that do particularly well. I forget the names. One Large wonder pays for any improvement that helps with commerce--marketplaces, banks, stock exchanges, harbors, airports, et cetera. As your cities get really big, the pay-off is tremendous. The other Small Wonder gives you interest on your total gold up to 50 extra per turn.

The Adam Smith wonder pays for money making improvements. Wall Street pays interest.

Thanks for the help! Another quick question: is the tutorial something you play in game? I tried looking around the main menu and couldn't find it.
