Anyone else excited by the release of Martin's fourth volume in "A Song of Ice and Fire"? Personally my excitement is now a little bit beyond that for the last few Harry Potter books. the anticipation for this one has been long and immense and now with only a week to go the days stretch out before me as agonizingly long.
If you're not familiar with A Song of Ice and Fire (written by George R. R. Martin), it's sort of the Sopranos of modern fantasy. It's relatively dark, and contains adult subject matter, there are only the faintest smatterings of magic in the first book, but it seems as though more is slowly leaking into the world. The series consists of: A Game of Thrones A Clash of Kings A Storm of Swords A Feast for Crows (Nov. 8)
The story concerns Four significant families in the land of Westeros, Targaryens, Baratheons, Lannister and Stark
The Targaryens were the conqueror kings who took over the continent and unified it with their dragons three hundred years before the book starts. But the dragons have all died out from inbreeding and some 14 or 15 years earlier Robert Baratheon rose against the injustice of the 'mad' king and overthrew him. a younger son and Daughter escaped and live in exile. Robert Baratheon is now king, and wed to the daughter of the wealthy Tywin Lannister. Ned Stark rules the northern half of the continent as Warden in the North, as his ancestors have. The story at first principally follows his family.
The Story begins with the realm on the edge of tumult, and everyones lives will soon change.
I promise its one of the finest reading experiences I've ever had, phenomenally good books and damn compelling tale.

Hey Adam, haven't seen you here in ages! Welcome back!
The forum is pretty much frothing at the mouth with anticipation, don't worry. There is a countdown thread around here somewhere, and a AFFC spoilers thread for the lucky few who have already gotten their hands on copies.

That's what I get for not looking past the first page, but it was in the AM hours and I was ready to go to bed.

Whereas I've been whipped up to a fever pitch about the release, and very nearly took the day off of work to read it.

Oh, I think X suffered enough, what with paying out the nose for overnight shipping, and then having to wait forever for them to actually ship him the book.
