I'm almost 17 and I've got the hair growing on my face fast enough to have a shot at styling something. I know I probably want a flava saver, I'm not too into moustaches, and I'll probably go with long sideburns. I want to be unique, without looking ridiculous, but I have no idea about facial hair styles, besides what I've seen.
Just wondering if anyone has advice for me. Or maybe this thread is just silly and I'll get no replies. Either way, it's worth a shot.

I'm a teenager who has a mustache and ... a goatee I guess you could call it. And people have told me that it looks quite good on me. So ... yeah. Ha.

Wow, that was a quick four replies! I'm guessing no-one here knows what a flava saver is. Just in case it's an Australian word only here's a pic. Orson Scott Card also has one of sorts, I just noticed, and those things that come up from chin hair to the lower lip also counts.
Okay, I'm definitely going with sideburns now since I already have a considerable length of it already.
I'm really quite surprised hatrack has taken interest in this. Thanks for all your help.

I've had a goatee since I was 18. I shaved it off once and horrified most of my friends who insisted that I grow it back and never shave it off again. I haven't since.
I've had mixed responses, from girls who tell me they hate it and find it a turn off, to one girl who says it's highly attractive and manly. Either way, as my best friend says "it's part of my personality" and I'll probably keep it for the forseeable future.

I grew a beard as soon as I graduated from high school (17). I don't think it was awful. It was a full beard, and it grew within two weeks of my stopping shaving. That's about how long it takes me now.
And I've had unique facial hair styles without, I think, looking ridiculous. Case in point. (And I had the pointy sideburns & goatee well before that look came into style.)

I can grow a mustache but no way in hell am i going to do that without making it a full on gotee. Its UNDER my lip i have trouble growing hair.

If its me you're talking about there breyerchic there's no need to take it back, as you should well know I've never cared about how I look If its someone else, then ignore this.
I've had facial hair since... well since it started growing pretty much. I've never liked shaving and never did it on a very regular basis. So I kinda went from peach fuzz to full beard with out ever being clean shaven much inbetween. I did try a goatee for a while there, but again with the requiring I do at least some shaving, so now I just stick with my lazy full beard. I shave it about once every few months to keep it from getting too scraggly. It works well enough for me, me being one who's never cared how he looks.
I'd say just pick something you like and go for it. Forget what anyone else says.

I'd love to be able to grow a beard, if only because I'm too lazy to shave and I'd like my laziness to pay off. Sadly, all my facial hair manages to do for me is that, "have you bathed in the last week?" look. Thin, patchy, dark hair. I haven't found any chicks that dig it out, but I still have hope.

At some point or another I have had pretty much every common facial hair arrangement and a few very, very uncommon ones. I think you should post a picture, so we can decide what would look best on you. And not at all so we can draw moustaches on it in photoshop, nope.

I stopped shaving in the beginning of december; I don't plan on shaving for at least 6 months.
Anyone know any good trimming utilities? I can leave it all scraggly like it is, although I'd like to make it look a little nicer.

At Wal-Mart, you can get a Wahl home grooming kit for about $13, which will serve for trims, shaving it off altogether, and haircuts. Look in the same aisle as the curling irons.

I've heard both these terms used equally often in America. I've also heard it referred to sparingly as the beatnik's badge, the triangular chin worm, and the eeeeeeevil twin.

I hate growing facial hair. Almost as much as I hate shaving. The two hates usually fight each other, and there is no guessing what I'll look like on a particular day.

Icarus, I don't need to be groomed, I'm a man! Well, almost... I can grow facial hair, what more could you possibly need to be qualified as a man? And I mean as opposed to a boy, not a woman, so don't even go there.
Enigmatic, I have one photo of myself from when I was like two years younger, so that's not really relevant, even though I think I've got the same facial shape in that picture as I do now. I'm putting off taking another until I get my next haircut (nothing to do with the fact I don't actually own a camera) 'cause, accoring to my "woman", (political correctness?) I'm going to be getting the most expensive haircut of my life this weekend. After that's done, I'm convinced some magical fairy will appear to me in the middle of the night and give me a camera.

As a teenager, I could probably grow a better beard than some adults can, but then again I had been shaving once a day since the beginning of 9th grade. As a side note, as a teenager, I never grew out any facial hair. I was always clean shaven.
At the moment (and at other times in the last year or so), I have a goatee. I get positive feedback from most of my female friends, saying it makes me look better and older. It's also multicolored (naturally, not artificially), so it's cool.

I look much better with a well-groomed jaw-line beard than without one. To me, that is. Everyone I know hates it.
I'm curious to know when and why people stopped liking each other's hair. I mean, when did it become socially unacceptable for people not to shave? How does it possibly benefit a woman for her to shave her legs? Why in the world is it that men grow beards and chest hair and women don't (at least, uh, usually)? Is there really some sort of evolutionary advantage to a hairy back? Does it trap heat or something?
What causes one person to be attracted to a dude with facial hair and another to be totally repelled by it on the same guy? I mean, what we're basically saying is that we won't find each other attractive unless we spend time on pretty dang useless rituals to change our natural appearance.
I don't get women who don't like beards and I don't get men who are creeped out by unshaven pits. I do admit to having a fear of a womanly mustache, but I think that's just lingering social conditioning.
By the way, I'm, uh, not usually this obsessed with the morality of hair. This thread just sparked my curiousity about why humans are so weird.

Yeah, not the same way. My facial hair has like 4 colors: dark brown, light brown, blond, and red. So when I have a goatee, it's multicolored. From a distance, it looks probably like a light brown. Up close though, you can see all sorts of colors. I think one girl described it as partially strawberry blond. *shrugs* Heck if I know though.

Some of my blond hairs get close to white, but I don't think they are white. Of course, I am 20. If I saw a lot of white hair, I'd probably freak out. It wouldn't be unexpected though, as I am a cynical old man in a 20 year old body.

Zotto!, to answer your question about facial hair:
I don't have a thing against facial hair in general. I do dislike certain patterns of growth, largely because of social conditioning, but I don't think I'm flat out repelled by them. "That guy looks like a 'hood" sort of responses. As for my comment about the patch, it reminds me so very much of my ex who always managed to miss the fold between his lower lip and where his chin started to jut out, and so I've been conditioned to think that it looks like the wearer is a sloppy shaver.
I like chest hair on my guys. Back hair, however, completely icks me out. {shudder}
And Jenna, my almost 9 year old has white hairs! Most of her hair is varying shades of dark brown, with bits of light brown, red, a couple blonde shades, and some pure white. So many times women have come up to me and commented that they wished they could get her hair color in a bottle...

A section of my eyebrow has been white since puberty -- it extend over into part of my sideburns as well.
I either tell people that I'm 1/76th albino or that I didn't reincarnate the whole way and as such part of me is still the very cranky 93-year-old man that I was in my previous life.
Of course, i'm starting to reach the point where it's hard to tell which is albino and which is simply age.
