So yeah. I took a step this morning, and my lower back kind of cracked. Ever since, I've had this terrible pain. It started in my lower back on the left side, and it's worked its way down the back of my leg to my ankle. And my left foot kind of tingles. It hurts worse when I arch my back backwards. I kind of feel like I should pop my back or something, but I don't know how to make that area pop.

Uh. What's wrong with me?

I think you need to go to a doctor if you want an answer to that question. Get feeling better and take care.

I don't think a doctor is an option at this point. I can't afford a real doctor, and I went to the clinic three times last week because of the toxic mold death plague. If I go again, they're likely to not take me seriously. Or maybe think I'm just trying to get more vicodin cough syrup.

It's worse standing than lying down. It's kind of, like, it hurts all the time, but it also throbs.

Go to the doc. I stepped wrong in the snow three years ago, and it didn't seem that bad then, but my hip is still in pain now. If I'd gone right away, I would probably have avoided the limp that messed me up.

Do you think popping my back, if I could do such a thing, would make a difference? I mean, is it possible something's just become misaligned? Should I try to get someone to play chiropractor? Could this have something to do with the ciatic (sp?) nerve? I asked someone, and he said that if it was that, I'd probably be incapacitated and begging him to take me to the hospital.

I haven't done any heavy lifting recently. Um, I've been sleeping on the couch because I don't have a bed...twisting around to the left side hurts pretty badly. *doing all sorts of experimental stretches*

It could be a pinched nerver (noted above) or it could be a slipped or bulging disc. If it's a disc issue, you really need a Dr or at least a chiropractor to help you out.

I have a herniated disc in my back and have had similar symptoms to what you are describing.

Could likely be sciatic. Not necessarily incapacitating, but you ARE describing neurogenic pain radiating down the sciatic nerve.

Dude,
Go back to the clinic. They'll think you're a hypochondriac, but since it's not for the toxic death mold they'll at least know you're not making it up.

*thwacks mack with pimp cane*

I called one of my friends, who is a massage therapist. Over the phone, he tried to help me find the offending nerve. I think I found it. He told me how to apply pressure to it, and the pain is a LOT better now. Basically, I guess I need a good butt/hip massage. [Razz]

Oh, and he told me to sleep on the floor tonight.

If it's worse tomorrow, I'll call my dad and tell him I absolutely need to see someone. But it's so much better now.

Well, a little subtlety might be a good start...

Woo!

Does sound like sciatica. I had it a while back and it certainly wasn't incapacitating. There are some good excercises that can help with that, but I would recommend seeing a doctor to make sure it isn't something worse. If it is a disk problem, these excercises could make things worse.

Keeping in mind sciatica's just a term for pinching of the sciatic nerve, yeah, it's probably a pinched nerve or slipped disc. GO SEE A DOCTOR. Trust me, you don't want to ignore this -- it can devastate you.

If you're insistent on waiting, take it easy for a week. If the pain doesn't go away, don't wait any longer, and go. Most hernias fix themselves, but some don't -- and those that don't, make life hell.

Be careful, dude.

Take it from someone who had a little "pop" in 1996, and spent about a year out of work with two surguries in 2001.

SEE A DOCTOR.

(and I wouldn't sleep on the floor)

I was on something called Z-cof HC. Actually, I'm still on it. It's got liquid vicodin and tastes like cotton candy. You'd think they'd want to make something like that taste bad, you know, to encourage the guzzling of the entire bottle.

I'll see a doctor if it doesn't go away soon. It's much better today. The pain isn't near the spine at all, is the thing. Wouldn't a disc cause pain at the spine?
