I applied to an MA program last week, and after messing up the supporting documents, I was in a panic.

The documents got where they belong, and now I'm waiting.

Just waiting. I'm going nuts. I check the status of my application several times throughout the day, even in the evening when of course no one's going to say anything. I'm almost obsessing.

How long do these things take, anyway?

(Edit: I guess I should update the title, huh?)

Where did you apply?

There is a cut off date, most schools require you to accept or decline their offers by April 15th I think, so definately before then. I would expect March is the time you hear, especially if you just finished sending in the application!

I'm in grad school right now, and let me tell you I could tell you the horror story to end all horror stories about admissions and what can go wrong (there are other options besides admission and rejection, worse options).

If you haven't heard by the second week in March e-mail the secretary in the department, they can tell you the status of the applications.

The deadline for applications was Sunday, and I think I'm supposed to know by late Feb?

Replies should be instantaneous, darnit!

I agree!

I am chuckling as I read your post. I have a close friend who I had to coach through driving her application to the college when she applied for her masters last week. She was going 2mph on the highway. Seriously. She also really dressed up for the event like she was going to have to defend her entrance essays to the board or something. This was after a fellow teacher and I spent a week editing her essays for her. I feel your pain.

Na, instantaneous replies are almost always rejections! What type of program are you applying for, because how long it takes depends on how selective it is. If they let most people in, then they aren't going to take that much time, but if they really look over every detail, then it can take a long time.

At my university a lot of times they have to get people to return from all over the world to look at the applications after they have copied them and sent them to be reviewed. It is a very long and involved process at my school.

For my current program, it took about a month and a half. Then they realized that the person doing the mail did it wrong and sent the wrong letter in my envelope. So I had to wait another week or so.

My rejections, on the other hand, came right away.

The program I am in now e-mailed us all before they sent the letters, so we all knew, but I e-mailed the sec a couple of days before and she let me know. My school had a place to check the status of your application, but my department is full of slackers so they don't update it.

All the schools I applied to had Jan. 15 application deadlines (one might have been Feb. 1), and I think I heard back from them all in early-mid March. The rejections came a little earlier than the acceptances, but only by a couple weeks. That part might depend on how many rounds of cuts your apps make it through - I was an alternate for one program, so it probably took longer for that rejection than it would have otherwise.

Disclaimer: I was in London when all my apps were going through, so this may have added a few days to the process since everything was being mailed to me in London rather than at home.

Good luck! [Smile]

pH, me too. Oops.

As for the topic at hand, I'll be in that boat next year, and I can only imagine how stressed out you must be. By next March, I'll know which law school will own my soul. Scary stuff.

UofT is awesome. I'm only a puny undergraduate but I can say with certainty that it is a great place to be and to be educated [Smile] .

Yeah for you!!! [Smile] That is an amazing feeling. When I applied to grad school, the first year I a pplied to one place and got rejected. Next year, I applied to 8 places. I had received 6 rejections and was so worried. Then, I got accepted by 2 out of my top 3 choices.
( ie school choice #2 and #3)

In my case, a lady at the school called and said, "this is to congratulate you on your acceptance to the blah blah university." I tell you, I replayed that message 6 TIMES!!!

Anyway, congrats. Are you from Toronto or Canada?

I'm from near Toronto, so I won't be moving very far at all. Living in The Big City will be a bit weird, but I think I'll like it. I've recently gotten very used to the whole "multicultural" atmosphere, and I have grown to like a lot of non-European things. So I'm only too happy to be moving somewhere where I can keep enjoying those things.

I've also found out recently that a number of friends from my school here will be in Toronto come the fall, and that is very exciting for me, since it means I won't be completely on my own.

Yay! *happy dance*

The first thing to know about any MA program is this:

"Work harder, play harder."

Everything else is just useless advice. [Smile]

Congrats, by the way.
