I just finished this game and in my opinion it was awsome. A vast economy streaching a huge number of systems and a vast number fully customizable ships.

I enjoyed Freelancer immensely. It is one of a very small number of plotted games I have ever played through to its conclusion. I loved the story arc--really well-crafted--and the sci-fi setting.
I could not get into Homeworld at all.

I remember coveting Freelancer, but I think that I still had an Amiga at that point, and that I waited in vain for them to port it over to that platform. I could be thinking of a slightly earlier game though.
I thoroughly enjoyed both Descent and Homeworld, by the way, although I don't think I finished either of them.

Homeworld = cool. HW2 = VERY cool graphics, not so cool gameplay.
The biggest thing that attracted me to Homeworld, though, was its plot. What's happened to all the plotted space shooters? FPS like Halo and Half Life are all over the place now, but you never see games like Tachyon the Fringe anymore... as I understand it, the X series has no online play.
I really need to find a copy of FS2. There's a multiplayer BSG mod coming out for it-- "Beyond the Red Line"-- that has some beautiful graphics.

Freespace was a great game, and the BSG mod looks increadible. Didn't they make FS2 open source or something? I remember seeing a site that claimed that it could not be distributed for free, but I'm not sure what the details were.
I was thinking about trying X-2, does anyone here have any recomendations for or against gettin it?

Freelancer is only so-so. Yeah, it's pretty but the actual gameplay hasn't improved since the DOS days with Wing Commander: Privateer.

Privateer! That was the game I was thinking about. Man I wanted them to create an Amiga version of that game.

The based space game off all time imo, is the Descent: Freespace series, particularly number 2.
I noticed that to, but I felt it was a small price to pay for such a vast areas to discover.
EVE Online == vast areas.
I'm not bashing Freelancer it was entertaining! Just not my best game of all time is all.
That FS2 mod looks sweet. Are those actual in game renders? Did they totally update that engine to DX9?

Bokonon: If you're gonna pick nits, LucasArts' ventures into the realm of adventure games were the peak of the genre. From olden gems like Loom, to '90s faves like Sam&Max and FullThrottle, and up to GrimFandango.
And even as Sam&Max2 and FullThrottle2 were in the works, they got nixed. I blame George Lucas's ego, which undoubtedly rose up out of his body and flew around the boardroom setting many toupees on fire, "convincing" LucasArts to drop its adventure games in favor of crappy StarWars Tactical games.
With any luck, some day someone will kick George Lucas in the balls and tell him "That was from Ben".

It's only 15 bucks a month, unlimited play... And if you get hooked to any of these sorts of games, you usually save money, because you aren't buying new games at 50 bucks a pop every month

I quit EVE-Online when I realized I was hanging out with married guys in their 40's whose wives hated them for their computer habits.
But for another plug Advent, if you want a really good space game, I'd highly recommend both of the Descent: Freespace games.
They're showing their age graphically, but they were top notch back in the day. I still remember firing my lasers into a crate and being floored when STUFF ACTUALLY STARTED LEAKING OUT. Whoaaaaa

Starcraft sux. I beta tested it and when it was finally released to the public, EVERYONE sucked. I stopped playing after I went 100-2 on it. It just was too simple. People see a good strategy on that game and they immediatetly copy it. At least on Warcraft III unit control and techniques such as flanking and pincering are more commonly used. Starcraft was good for a few months but if you ask most of the beta testers, they will tell you that the people playing it now are playing it all wrong.

Ha. That's like saying because you beat everyone in fourth grade at basketball when you were a fifth grader, that theres no point in playing basketball anymore.
My favorite series are Descent and the Fallout both mostly defunct atm.
