It involved a man who lived on a space station that generated artificial gravity by spinning; the paperback cover was a purple and black illustration of the station.

It involved a man who was away from earth for a long time and came home years and years later to find his mother was temporarily a lesbian because they implemented certain population controls on earth...my memory of it is very sketchy and vague, but I remember reading it over and over again when I was younger.

Any hypotheses?

Hmm I think I'm confusing the purple cover book with Haldeman's "The Forever War." I wish I could remember more about the old paperback...
