Russia—our sacred state, Russia—our beloved country. A mighty will, a great glory Are yours forever for all time!
Be glorious, our free Motherland, Ancient union of brotherly peoples, Ancestor given wisdom of the people! Be glorious, country! We are proud of you!
From the southern seas to the polar region Lay our forests and our fields. You are one in the world! You are one of a kind, Native land protected by God!
Be glorious, our free Motherland, Ancient union of brotherly peoples, Ancestor given wisdom of the people! Be glorious, country! We are proud of you!
Wide spaces for dreams and for living Are open to us by the coming years. Our faith in our Motherland gives us strength. So it was, so it is, and so it will always be!
Be glorious, our free Motherland, Ancient union of brotherly peoples, Ancestor given wisdom of the people! Be glorious, country! We are proud of you!

Not if you look at it a different way. The first world war would always be WWI, and the second would be WWII, regardless of causation. If war had erupted in 1948, and the war in 1914 hadn't happened, WWII would have been WWI, and WWII would never have occurred. Therefore, the existence of WWII is dependent on the existence of WWI. The Great War was probably inevitable in some form or other from 1870 or thereabouts, but the peace didn't have to be Versailles. Any war contains a vast number of potential PODs; it might have been quite possible to get a real Great-Power peace that reflected the genuine strength of the powers and therefore lasted 50 years, or better still, a hegemonic victory for Germany leading to more-or-less permanent peace.

Blayne, spasibo! Very naive question, is this song sung to the old tune of the USSR hymn? While I was reading the pripev I kept wanting to sing:
Slavsya Otechestvo, nashe svobodnoje, Druzhby narodov nadyozhnyy oplot! Partia Lenina, sila narodnyaya, Nas k torzhestvu Kommunizma vidyot!
And another embarassing question, is this the new official RF national anthem then? When I left Russia many years ago there was a tune (not the original USSR hymn), but no words. Somehow I never followed up on it.
Thanks again for the lyrics. Especially in Cyrillic. You went above and beyond! Molodez.

Yeah, he is a great man. He wrote some of my favorite children's books too. Remember Dyadya Styopa?
