It was bad enough when Duncan Hines did it. And those Coke Blak things are weird anyway.

But THIS is a tragedy of operatic proportions!

I think they are the thin chocolate covered mints in little square packages. A lot like York Patties but better.

A sample box.
This review has a good picture showing both exterior and interior. I disagree with him about their quality though. They're marvelous!
Another good image.

They are York Patties that have been to prep school, spent a year in Europe, worked with a trainer to be simply fabulous, and are now grown up and sophisticated. And oh so very delicious.

I'm assuming that having butterfat in them makes them non-kosher somehow, right?

How is this bad? Is it because they now can't be eaten after meals with meat or something else?

Beware, eating After Eight chocolate might have an affect on your sexual orientation.

The anti-transfat movement is going to affect the dairy status of a lot of foods.

I'm curious too. Does this mean you can never eat them again ever, or just in certain contexts?

Yup. Which means, for example, not being able to serve them after Shabbos or holiday meals, which are almost always meat. That's when I usually have them. (Not that I have them so very often.)

Is there any chocolate mint that doesn't include milk now? Do Andes mints? I like them better than After Eight, but I don't know the contents.

mph, [ROFL]

koj, I have no idea what Andes mints contain. AFAIK, they're not kosher.

There are plenty of kosher-niche brands that make non-dairy chocolate mints of assorted types. (There's even at least one After Eight imitator, but they are a pale reflection of the perfection of After Eights. And way more expensive.) Some are ok, some are even pretty good; almost all are considerably more expensive than After Eights. Which are not only delicious, but quite inexpensive.

breyerchic, I don't know what the adult content was in my link--it's a video with many "NOOOOOO!"s taken from movies.

I've never tried them, but your poetic description makes me want to, Rivka.

One bit of trivia: Weird that chocolate mints became an ubiquitous digestif , because both chocolate and mint can (for some people) trigger heartburn (I think they relax the valve on top of the stomach).

quote:
Myth: After-dinner mints offer a soothing way to drift off to sleep.
Fact: Mints on the pillow are generally not a good way to ensure a peaceful night for heartburn sufferers. In fact, bedtime mints combine three common heartburn triggers—chocolate, mint and lying down—making them more likely to inspire heartburn than pleasant dreams for some sufferers.

Mint is both a digestive irritant AND a digestive soother. It can settle some types of mild indigestion (particularly those caused by overindulgence, IIRC), but as you say, it can cause relaxation of the cardiac sphincter. Which effect predominates varies -- I often notice both effects.

Different parts of the digestive tract react differently to relaxation. At least, I think that's the reasoning I remember learning A Long Time Ago.
