I've posted before about my early 20s growth spurt. At 20-21 I added an inch in height.

Today I put on a hat I hadn't worn in a few years (since I was 20 or 21), and it barely fit, and immediately started to give me a headache.

It had just been sitting around during that time in my house. It is a 7 1/2 (the largest size in the hat store the last time I was there... I think.

So what the heck is going on? I just got a haircut and my hair is very short at the moment- shorter than at time when I wore the hat over a thick head of hair. at 22 1/2, could I possibly still be growing?

I know that leather shoes definitely shrink if not worn very often. Would this hat be leather?

I was going to suggest it as a possibility. Is any of it made of cotton?

What the...

Well, peoples heads do grow throughout life, or so I thought. I always thought the bone mass kept getting added to at a miniscule rate until like 45 or 50.

Also muscle is added to one's skull. That could be it. I definitely have more meat on my head than I used to. i clench my jaw and my head changes shape. But I do not know if I have any on the crown of my skull. I sure don't feel any...

And everything here is conjecture... not fact. Well, it might be fact, but I cannot remember whether it is.

It's a cotton hat. It's been sitting in the same corner of the same room for over a year.

Cotton can definitely shrink if not stretched for a long time. Humidity is a prime culprit -- ordinary air is enough to do the trick.

I doubt your head grew.

Yes, cotton, felt, leather and other hat materials can shrink. Or stretch. But usually they shrink if they do anything. As martha said, humidity plays a big role.

brojack has a point, too. Are you getting fatter all over? How about your shoe size?

I am about the same size I was a year ago. Maybe 10 pounds heavier because of my back problem (no excercise for a few months).

My shoe size is around 14, and it's about the same as it was a few years ago as well.

Probably just the hat, then. Maybe you should use a measuring tape and write it down to compare later, just in case.

Have you gotten incredibly smarter over the past year? Exponential brain growth could result in a larger cranium. [Smile]

Or have you become conceited?

If so, cultivate a negative self-image and your hat will fit again.

My 7 yr old son wears a size 7 1/2 hat. He also wears a 7-8 slim boys clothing, and a size 13 children's shoe. He sorta reminds me of a lamppost...

Maybe your ears have grown and take up more room in the hat?

Ears don't go in hats. That's just wrong (unless it is a toque or has flaps).
