17 year old figures out how to unlock the iPhone so it can be used with other providers and posts instructions on his blog.
T-Mobile is the only other US carrier the phone is compatible with, so it's not a huge deal here, but it's apparently compatible with several carriers in Europe, where the iPhone is not currently available at all.
It takes 2 hours and isn't easy, so ymmv.

It's also only a halfway hack, because the visual voicemail - arguably the iPhone's most important & unique feature - requires cooperation from the service provider.
Still, I can see it being worth the time and effort to tech savvy types in non-USDM areas, who will get the "woah, is that an iPHONE?" factor times a hundred.

Seeing as that company is selling licenses of 500 or more only and hasn't posted a price yet, it might not actually be more practical.
