i was talking to a friend who never comments on here and just lurks and reads the message boards. i think that he should come out here and tell me which book i should read first since i've never read an orson scott card book. or does anyone else recommend anything?
Personally I'd say start with Ender's Game and work your way forward in that series, but then, I haven't read anything other than Ender stuff, so you'd have to look to others for suggestions.

I second Enders Game. On the other hand, I really liked Enchantment so I don't think that'd be a bad place to start either.

For the Ender series I'd also recommend starting with Enders Game. But if your tastes run more in the direction of fantasy - you should consider the Alvin Maker series.

Yes, Ender's Game should give you a pretty good idea of what OSC is about. Additionally, the big short story collection Maps in a Mirror, which you can get a cheap used copy of from Amazon, gives a great panoramic view of OSC; and it includes the short story version of Ender's Game.

Hmm, I've had a very different experience, I find that people on Hatrack are very friendly and supportive. Blayne, I haven't read any of your threads lately so I'm not sure if you are joking or if you have had a negative experience recently that makes you post something like that. Michelle, welcome to Hatrack and I'd say read Ender's Game first as well.

"Blayneis anidiot" and
"suck my ****"
are telling examples.
What's your "insert webpage"?
And you these are Hatrack people submitting these because...???
quote: you don't wish to come here, people here are jerks who will eagerly insult you at every opportunity, you were better off lurking
And now I'm sure you're going to call me a jerk but... no one is forcing you to be here. If this board is so full of jerks etc you can always stop coming here...

1) What makes you assume they are hatrackers? 2) Some of your posting behavior and mannerisms are imo not very mature which may provoke annoyed behavior. But I don't think that - as a group - hatrack has been cruel to you, Blayne.

Blayne, while I agree that some people here have been jerks to you, it is by no means a universal practice, nor even close to it. It's also not good form to stomp in someone's introductory thread about this. Take this to a separate thread if you feel it necessary to discuss this.

It's also to creative to creatively insult a person who's always insulted. And more challenging than not insulting.

No, no. You're supposed to threaten him with your l33t martial arts skillz. There's a script for acting pathetic on the internet and you're not following it.

Oh, also, Blayne, that comment was inappropriate.

So, Michelle, who is this Danger I've been hearing so much about and how you love him? Does he drive a wicked fast car? Also, that's not his first name is it? I mean, he's probably like J. Danger Coolguy, am I right?
Ender's Game is your best bet for an entry OSC book, but there are plenty of other really good books. One possible other entry book might be Maps in a Mirror, which is a collection of short stories, many of which are pretty great.

Like many others have suggested, Ender's Game is a great place to start. My other all time favorite Orson Scott Card book is a book called the Worthing Saga. Anything by Card is good really, you could probably just pick up anything by him and enjoy it.

Why does this thread seem to have 2 totally different conversations?
It could be that the post that started the 2nd was deleted. My recommendation would have been to just simply edit said post down to nothing and leave it. That way we would know that something was said but later removed. As it is it can be a little confusing.
Oh, and welcome!
I also lurked for quite a while before posting.
