I was just thinking over what I would want to name a child and came up with this list:
Constance Athos Valentine (Faust reference, sorry OSC) Leon (As many things as this *can* come from I like it from They're Playing Our Song) Dorian Sebastian
What do you want to name your kid? I had to try to draw the line between names which I love and those which would get the kid beat up. I had to take out d'Artagnan... not to mention that it isn't actually a first name.
Edit: Gideon is also good.
Edit2: I originally intended to include Evangeline but for some reason forgot. A post on this thread reminded me.

I feel like a bit of a geek, because guys are not generally thought of as the gender that picks out names for their kids...but I have a few in mind.
Howard Joseph -
Joseph (my maternal grandfather's middle name, and a common name in every generation of the family) Howard (my middle name, my paternal grandfather's first name)
This is one I'll use for sure, even if I have to have a half dozen kids until I get to a boy. The men these names honor were good fathers, great community builders, defenders of their nation, and well respected. Any child alive would be lucky to have a name so worthy. I'm very much a fan of history, especially family history.
Other boy names I like,
Theodore (Teddy for short, named for Teddy Roosevelt) John Adams (named obviously, but I doubt my future wife would let me have that one)
For girls I like:
Winter Harmony Marie Layla Elanor
I know Harmony and Winter probably sound like hippy names, but Autumn and Summer are common enough girl names, I don't see why Winter can't be as well, plus I think it sounds nice. And what's wrong with a little Harmony? Elanor is after Eleanor Roosevelt, and Layla is just pretty.
I briefly considered giving my kids all H names, but I have cousins who are Randy, Ronny, Rusty, Renee and Richard. I wouldn't do that to my kids. I figure I'll probably want to name some of the other kids (I wouldn't mind two or three total, but wouldn't rule out four) after the grandparents or what not of my future wife, so I'll leave some room open for that.

Joseph is one of my most liked boys names, and I would like to call my son that (if I had a son), except my brother is Joseph (Joe for short). I think perhaps it would be too much for both Uncle and nephew.
Other than that I don't know- well, Tony and I have names for our child if we have a daughter (two options, both first and middle) but we cannot even begin to agree on boys names. So when we do have a child, if it's a boy, I imagine it will be a tense few days after the birth!

I love Russian names though I don't know if I'd have the guts to name a child of mine one of them. Well girls are safer. My favorite Russian name is,
Fyodor.
I'll most likely give all my children additional Chinese names that they can learn to write and pronounce.
My paternal grandmother's name was Constance, and hence my youngest sister got that as a middle name.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about naming people after virtues like Temperance, Prudence, Hope, Faith, Grace, etc.

WHEREVER in the world did you get that idea, Lyrhawn?
I don't know any couples in which the father didn't have a huge say in the choices.
(in my situation, we mutually agreed that he would name girls and I would name boys -- but we each like the names the other picked, so it worked out well)

Whenever I've ventured forth my ideas for kids names amongst my friends I've always gotten jeers and funny looks, like a family and kids and such isn't something I should be thinking about like that. I'm not sure if it's because of my age (I doubt it) or my gender (which makes more sense).
I'm sure fathers have an immense role in the decision making process, I think the disputed part would be whether or not they often plan out the names for their kids years before hand.

One of my first friends was Jessica Harmony H_______. She was very upset to find out she lived on Harmony Road in first grade. Her brother's middle names were Walnut and Jordan. Both street names in our town, that her parents had lived on before she was born.
I have at times in my life had names picked out, but often they have changed as I've matured. Thank goodness since at one point I wanted daughters named Keely and Lyric. There was another time much more recently I was in love with the name Arachne. The only reason I convinced myself away from that name is that she killed herself in the myth, not that she became a spider.
Right now Amelia Ellen and Penelope Agnes. For boys John ______ likely having to do with my future husband's name or family, the kid does not have to be called John (my dad and grandpa are not).

Well, we are going to name the next one either Margaret (Maggie), probable middle name Faith, or if it's a boy, James (Jimmy), probable middle name Robert (the middle names are still under discussion.)
Girls' names we have picked out after that are Jennifer (Jenny) Katherine, and possibly Rebecca Elaine, although I'm kinda up in the air on that one; I used to like it more than I do now. We already used Emma Rose and Bridget, both of which were on our list, although I changed my mind on Bridey's middle name.
Future boys' names we have picked out for after Jimmy is here are Ciaran (middle name used to be Michael but now we are wavering on that) and John Alexander (Alex.) We've discussed a few other names but haven't come to a consensus yet.

0Meg, you just rocked my world. Fiancee and I already picked out two girls' names for Hypothetical Children, using our moms' names for middle names. We chose: -Emily Christine (my mom) -Victoria Elizabeth (his mom)
Boys names are still much under debate. I like Nicholas and Christian; Boy Toy has vetoed both. Especially since he's agnostic, the last one REALLY doesn't fly. But I think it's pretty.

That's sad because of the three names, I think Symphony is the coolest.
I also approve of Winter, although I'm not sure I'd name a real child Winter.
I don't know what I would call my hypothetical children, which is odd because as a younger person I was always planning, intrigued by names.

I'm so glad my parents didn't try to follow a theme when they named us. It would have driven me nuts to have a sister named Harmony, or anything else music related. Luckily, I only have brothers, so they were never tempted.

My friend's sister's name is Melody and had he been a girl, his name would have been Harmony. The oldest child was a boy, so who knows what would have happened had all three of them been girls.

I'm partial to Lillian for a girl, and my boyfriend likes Spencer for a boy. I actually like Shia (yes, like THAT Shia) for either a girl or a boy.

The only name I really had my heart set on was Sayuri for a girl, but after Memoirs of a Geisha came out on the big screen, I became less sure I wanted to saddle someone with it.
That, and I'm less and less sure I'm going to raise my kids in Hawaii, and I don't want her or I to deal with the inevitable butchery the name would receive on the mainland.

If I have a girl I want to name her Elinor Therese and call her Nora for short (which is cute). If I have a boy, I sort of want to call him Indigo. And Indy for short, like Indiana Jones. And properly he'd be named Jude Indigo, so that if he ended up hating Indigo he could revert to Jude.
However, my family rebels against this whole Indigo idea. I have proposed Japheth as an alternative, but they are unenthusiastic about this too. So if I have a son I will probably be boring and end up naming him John. Or Joseph.

Cameron has always had negative name association with me. In High School I was in Mock Trial and sophomore year the "alleged" criminal was named Cameron. I was always convinced that he/she did it!

I had a great idea. When I'm filling out the papers to name my kid I will put their middle name as Danger. Of course I won't mention this to my wife, and hope she doesn't find out for a while.

For boys I love the names Nathaniel and Samuel (Sam) - although I'd have to pick one or the other as I wouldn't want kids with rhyming names. I also like Liam, Jack and Alec.
For girls I've always liked Ariadne and Octavia. Also Freya and Islay (pron. Ey-la like the Scottish Island). If I could get away with it, not being at all Japanese, I'd name a girl Yoshiko. And, for some reason, I like September, but I'd name the goldfish that.
Basically, if I were having a kid, the acid test for a name would be to go down the supermarket and yell it very loudly and angrily in the middle of the vegetable aisle. If it still sounded beautiful, I'd know I'd made the right choice.
I once saw a gravestone for a girl called Silence. Cruel, but cool.

Before deciding, I encourage everyone to go here.
I picked our Aerin's English name from Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown. I waited to make my final decision until I saw that there was a real person named Aerin, with the same spelling. Hooray for Aerin Lauder. Also, I wanted to make sure that people pronounced her name Air-in, not Err-in.
Aerin's Hebrew name is Sela Shoshana, after Andrew's aunt and paternal grandmother. I have all of my other favorite Hebrew baby names picked out, though I can't divulge them until the proper time. They'll all be different than the child's English names - not just the Hebrew version of their English names like mine is. I had an easier time picking out the Hebrew names for some reason. If Aerin and/or any future kids decides to go by their Hebrew names, that'll be fine with me.
Andrew and I have a deal - I will name all the children that I give birth to. Though if he had strong feelings against any of the names, I might have reconsidered. If we have a boy, he will be named after my grandfather. I'm struggling with girls' names. I didn't really think beyond naming Aerin. At least I have plenty of time.

Don't have any potential children (and I'm hoping and praying that I don't ever have any more potential children)
My five actual children, however, received the following names:
Enoch David Amelia Madeline Katarina Wynn Aidan Christopher Ava Claire
There are lots of potential pitfalls to avoid when naming children (I won't spell them all out for you here). Here's one we missed until almost 6 months after Ava was born: Aidan and Ava have the same initials. Not a huge problem, but it complicates things. If we ask our kids to label belongings with their initials, Aidan and Ava have a problem.

I am currently 12 weeks pregnant. We don't know what we are having yet. If the baby is a boy it will be Benjamin Alexander or Benjamin Xavier. I like Xavier better but if its Alexander his initials will be BAM which I think is really cute. We are much less decided about a girl's name. In the running are: Eliza, Ella, Eva, Anna, Bianca and Madeleine. We haven't even tried to tackle middle names yet with the girl names. None seem just right to me even though most of them were originally my suggestion.
