As you may have guessed, I am woefully uninspired as to what to get people. My family is a science-y lot, likes games, "cool stuff" (but not stupid and cool... mainly cool), I don't know. please throw out whatever you think might help. Thanks.... feeling quite discouraged about the whole situation.

Present hunting is the ultimate game of empathy. But I still always end up getting stuff that *I* would really like, thinking everyone else is like me. This actually works sometimes.
That's my advice, starsnuffer. Get a whole bunch of stuff that you would like, and give it away. It feels good in a way.

I was in the mood for electronic gadgets this Christmas so I got one brother a magellan gps nav system, the other one an mp3 player and some ear buds, my niece a docking station for her iPod with speakers so she has an mp3 stereo, my son a Zune, and for the girls I got Godiva chocolates. That's all the ideas I have. I'm bad at presents, something I consider to be a severe character flaw, because like Launchywiggin said, it's a game of empathy.
Usually I do try to think of something I like that the other person likes, too. I try to find out what are our shared likes, and go with those things, because that gives me a basis for judging what's cool to have in that category.
Other than that, I pray for inspiration, and I find that helps tremendously in thinking of something good that the person will really enjoy. Posts: 6246 | Registered: Aug 2004

If you don't have it already, we find it a really good family game. Everyone from me (the physics major) to my 11 year old sister can play and enjoy it. Mind you, it's not sciencey - it's just fun.

I'm getting my brother (who I hope doesn't read this forum, but then I have three brothers so I'm probably safe) a soldering station from Radio Shack. It's got a big magnifying glass and a pair of aligator clips and a coil to hold the soldering iron. And it was under $15.

Thanks for the ideas folks. I'm thinking of getting some books or.. something else for my Grandpa. Any suggestions of book or just something a Grandpa would want?
