I had an idea, but I wasn't sure if it was possible.
Keep registration closed, but have a section of the forum open to the public. If someone proves themselves a non-spammer in that section, they are granted access to the main forums or any other section they might want to post in. I figure it will weed out all of the baddies in our sections.

That's basically what we do now with these forums, isn't it? I mean, it's not like we grant access to the secret forums to just anyone.

There's a secret forum? No one told me.

Would it be possible to prevent new users from starting threads until they've made, say ten posts? Have we ever had spam within threads? Or would that encourage spam that's harder to find than FREE PRON!!!!! in the subject heading?

I kinda like this idea. I'm not sure ten is needed. Maybe only five, or just two? But really, I don't see why that wouldn't be possible. I don't think I've ever seen spam bots that post within a thread, but I suppose it's possible.

If someone is visiting and wants to post, I will lend out one of my old throwaway alternative IDs. Email me at ctthrowaway at yahoo dot com. I'll check it at least every other day, but that account gets loads of spam, so you might need to resend. Title the email "Hatrack ID Request" so I can search for it.

Ah, but who's the Keeper of the Kwea?

I possibly have some throwaway IDs, but I'm not 100% sure. I know many that had 0 posts got culled. Let me know if you run out, CT. Hopefully, this is just for the holidays.
