Always a little behing the eight-ball(or snitch), I just discovered that my college started a Muggle Quidditch sensation. Rules have been changed to account for gravity, but I see this as the next Ultimate Frisbee, a game started as a joke(OK, I thought it was a joke) which is now a seriously-taken sport. I am not sure how serious this can ever be taken, but still...

I like the on-ice idea! The shape of the rink would be perfect.
Enig, if you go on Wikipedia, it tells how they score. I think they kept many ridiculous aspects of the scoring.
Middlebury students are generally extremely athletic, so most of the players are probably lacrosse, rugby, or soccer, and/or hockey players, and will make this into an athletic game, not a joke. Can I buy stock in this, somehow?

IF they would do away with the silly broomstick angle, this could be an interesting game.
But having the snitch as a real person is crazy, how do you insure they are impartial - it's all too easy for a snitch to allow themselves to be "caught" by the home team.

There would have to be a league of snitches, and they would have to sign some sort of bond.
If you watch, they use the broomsticks in the game. It leaves it open for someone to make a brromstick with certain "cutaways" for ease of use. I think the game without broomsticks would be sillier, myself.

Second the stupid scoring system. I started a post about that years ago and everyone beat up on me for 'blasphemy on Harry Potter'. As someone who has spent about 35 of his 39 years on earth making up weird sports, Quidditch has to be the dumbest game ever made up.
It is like playing a baseball game, but giving a special 100 run bonus to the team that manages to buy the first bag of cotton candy when a vendor appears in the stand!

Honestly, this doesn't seem interesting to me at all. The broomstick thing is just absolutely silly to me, as is the scoring. If you take those out, though, what do you really have except some sort of generic handball.
I could see playing around with it as a joke, but actually trying to make it into any sort of competitive activity seems absurd to me.

Much to the annoyance of many good friends, I consider Ultimate Frisbee to be a silly game. It is now a recognized sport. I also have a feeling that this Midd Kid will make a few bucks before he's done.

Sounds a bit more like a combination of flag football (The Snitch), dodgeball (the bludgers) and I guess handball or maybe lacrosse for the chasers.
I was wondering, when I read this, how they'd work out the bludgers and that actually seems like a pretty inventive way of doing it. The Snitch concept is interesting, and it seems like it'd be fraught with possible fraud. I wonder if it'd be better to have two Snitches, one from each opposing team and they run like mad to get away from the other team's Seeker. Bit of a departure from the concept I know.
The field needs to be a lot, lot bigger. There's just too many people in such a small space. It should be played on a full size soccer field.
Agreed, sort of, about the League of Snitches (heh) if they were to remain an independent body. But that's almost why I wonder if there shouldn't be one per team, to ensure they try their hardest, and because it'd be easier to keep track of stats like speed and time to being caught as a way of really judging their value.
I'm wondering how long it'll be until they change the rule so that the broom doesn't have to be between your legs, you just have to carry it, and you're allowed to use it to hit the ball until it takes on an air of field hockey or baseball or some such. Frankly I think that'd be a good addition, as Beatears have clubs they wield specifically to hit the bludgers with, and in the movies they regularly used their brooms to swat at the ball, but actually being footbound with the broom between their legs seems like an impediment that'll make it hard in the long term.
Playing it on ice would be interesting, but then really it's just hockey with different goals, as hockey is already a physical game.
If I were to do it, there'd be opposing Snitches and Seekers who have a sort of independent game of flag football/tag going on, and then move the broom from out of their legs. Don't give Beaters points for hitting people with the ball, but they would get credit for those Hits, like a hit/check in hockey, and it'd be added to their stats (that's be great for Fantasy Quidditch people). Other than that I have no problem with the scoring for the rings, and 50pts for whoever catches the Snitch first plus ending the game is fine with me too. If it were a real field, like built just for Quidditch, I'd suggest more dramatically changing the position of the rings. Not so much that it's impossible for the Keeper to stop a Chaser, but, there'd have to be some taller and shorter ones so he'd have to dive to stop one or really reach, maybe with his broom to stop a high ring.
The only change for the scoring I could see would be to change the value of each ring, maybe change the size of the rings too to make some of them harder to hit and thus higher point values, and lower ones for the bigger easier to hit rings.
Edit to add: I'd also consider a rule mandating mixed gender teams. I don't know what the ratio should be, but maybe it'd just be a minimum, like there has to be at least two guys and two girls, and you can do whatever you want with the rest. There are mixed teams very easily in the Wizard rule because flying ability isn't ruled by gender, skills seem to come regardless of it, but guys are just going to be better, probably, at certain areas of quidditch on the ground, but I like keeping mixed teams from the original game, as opposed to having two different leagues.

I have watched a few of the videos, and the middlebury players are already using the brooms as sticks. Oh, dear. No need to explore that image.
Anyway, I also noticed a cool lifting of the broom with a flick of the foot.
I like the Snitch as it is, but what if there were two snitches, one from each team, and you had to play a two-game set, alternating snitches?

I would say that the best way to avoid bias would actually be a two snitch game. The alternating game idea is great if you actually do have two honest snitches, or even if you have two dishonest snitches it works out, but if you have one and one, then you are throwing a game away.
Plus, I think that seekers should have to keep the brooms between their legs, it would give the snitch a small edge to keep the game going. Maybe they could have a series of snitches so that the snitch doesn't get tired and become easier to catch?
I'm a bit fuzzy on the rules from the books, does the seeker HAVE to be the one to catch the snitch, or is he the one that's just entailed with the full time job of looking for the snitch?

My university (University of Georgia) has had one a couple years now, but we don't do any intercollegiate stuff. There are just four House teams, and they play every Sunday. I usually go watch.

This is Jasmine Horn, semi-retired Savannah Quidditch League Director. Our SCAD team went over to play UGA on April 13th and we had a fantastic time! (Hi Joldo!)
The Intercollegiate Quidditch World Cup is coming up on October 25-26, 2008 at Middlebury.
On my team it's been difficult getting volunteers for snitches. Believe me, once you're in the snitch gear, you do not want to be caught, by either team! I don't think there is much snitch-bias.
By Intercollegiate Quidditch Association (IQA) rules, catching the snitch is only worth 50 points instead of the canon 150. Goals with the quaffle are still 10 points each. It works really well, brooms and all.

There does need to be some sort of incentive to deter the snitch from throwing the game. Perhaps some sort of reward based on how long the snitch can avoid being caught would work. Maybe a separate snitch 'championship' in which snitches compete based on time to capture would be sufficient "reward" for good snitching. There is definite potential here for some genuine athleticism. Speed, agility and endurance would all be required for the snitch competition.

So, not to bump an old thread, but I was thinking about posting something about this, but wanted to search to see if it had been discussed before. It has, but it's sorely outdated.
Our team's going to the world cup this year. We're super psyched. We just got back from an Invitation at Purdue university. Things were super fun (When people bothered to actually read the rule-book, and the referee's knew what they were doing... I'm digressing)
Fun! Has anybody else here picked up the sport yet? There are over 800 colleges and high schools world-wide now.

Of all the fictional games I've ever either read about or seen depicted. Pyramid is in the top three. It looks like they're are enough details shown that they could turn it into a real thing.
Number one remains Sabacc. I maintain that casino Sabacc could be the biggest card game in the world if done right.
