So, I'm trying to decide between Tivo and getting a DVR from my cable company. I'm with Charter here in Greenville, SC. I don't see that price wise there's a huge difference, but if I go back to school and live on campus (which I might) next year, I think the Tivo will work with the on campus system, but I will not have access to the Cable Company option there. Anybody have any opinions? Especially if you are also a Charter Customer?

I have the same question, except with Cox cable (and I'm not going back to school).

I own a Tivo, and have used the brighthouse cable DVR (my parents use it), and I prefer Tivo. I personally find it easier to use...both to set up new recordings, and to do things like season pass and such. Also, the search features are much better on Tivo.

I also used the Cox cable box when I was in Gainesville, before I had a Tivo. I had similar complaints that I have with the Brighthouse version. Overall it works, but it just is not organized as well as the Tivo is. Of course it was around 3 years ago that I used the Cox DVR, so they might use a vastly different one now.

The one thing I will say for the cable companies DVRs are they are made to work with that company's system. You don't have to worry about getting a cable card, or using the IR controllers (that I use). However, I personally don't see that as enough of a benefit to cancel out all the ease of use and features of the Tivo.

My aunt has Charter and has loved it. I find it a bit onerous but then I hardly ever use it. She has had no problems with it.
