So I totally sold out this weekend and bought a new iPhone. And I'm really loving it.

I just got around to playing with the app store tonight and wanted to share some fun finds, and invite others to do so.

So far I've only taken advantage of the free apps.

Pandora: This app is an iPhone specific Pandora program. Works just like regular Pandora but in a neat little iPhone package.

cons: if you exit the program it stops playing music, so you can't do anything else while it's running.

Box Office: Enter your zip and search radius. Sort by theater name or distance, or movie(sorted by name or by rotten tomatoes rating). Shows theater listings and has links to order tickets. Launches Safari to buy them through mobile fandango.

cons: none. this thing is awesome. although certain theaters you can't do online through fandango and have to go through moviefone manually. but if they used moviefone instead, you'd have the same problem anyway.

Shazam: This thing is so neat, with an actual prospect of being useful sometime. You launch it any time there is music playing out of any source. it listens to the song for like 10 seconds and then takes you to a screen with the song name and artist, links to buy it off itunes and a link to a related youtube video with it. So far it's gotten a majority of songs I've thrown at it. I can't tell you how many times I hear something and want to know the name or who does it.

cons: It's probably not so hot with obscure stuff, which is usually when i don't know who the artist is.

Remote: Turns your iPhone into a wireless remote for iTunes or Apple TV. You can access and control your iTunes library graphically right from your iPhone anywhere within wifi range of your home.

cons: none that i know of.

Light: turns the iPhone into a flashlight by making the screen all white. this is kind of useful if it's really dark. I've used cell phones plenty of times as flashlights, and this optimizes the process by turning the whole iPhone screen as bright as possible.

cons: ? not complicated enough to have any cons!

That's all for now. I still have more free ones to mess around with before I get into any of the pay apps. I did notice a remote desktop app which I have a feeling i'll end up buying though. Anyon else?

Twitterific: a Twitter client that uses your data connection instead of your text messages. The UI is clean, it's easy to use, and it loads quickly even over EDGE.

NewsNetWire: a RSS reader. Since I have a first gen iPhone, being able to compress the sites that I visit frequently is a big plus. You manage your feeds at Newsgator.com. All in all, a nice little app.

Doesn't Light have an inexplicable ant magnet problem? I'd say that's a con.

PhoneSaber Puts a lightsaber on the screen and makes lightsaber sounds on your iPhone as you swing it around.

Tap Tap Revolution No need to describe it.

hah, i downloaded that one, but then deleted it. Probably not the safest thing to be swinging that iPhone around like a lightsaber. [Smile]

Out of curiosity, what apps do you want that don't currently exist? I'm in the iPhone development program and have a couple things in progress, but I'm always interested in hearing what people want to see.

i'll have to get back to you when I've had a chance to really do a more thorough browsing of the apps. And as I use the iPhone more and get a feel for it.

But that's really cool. How'd you get involved with that?

I've been doing handheld development as hobby since the original Pilot came out. I didn't really do much with Windows Mobile, but the iPhone was intriguing enough to get me interested again.

Apple won't let that on the app store. It would have to be released through other channels.

I would like something that would accept Outlook appointments as appointments and not just as e-mails.

MattP,
I thought of one last night. I would like to see an app that tracks weight loss through BMI. There is a weight tracker on there, but it only tracks the weight. Since I am doing serious weight training also, I don't lose much weight, but I am losing BMI. It would be nice to see something that would track my fat loss not just weight.

I'd like an application that handled more of the IM clients (Yahoo, MSN, etc).

Trillian for iPhone. That'd be cool.

Also, something that would read excel and word files on the iPhone.

The mail app can read the Excel and Word files, but I think you mean something a little more dedicated.

Yeah, I want a spreadsheet on my screen that I can go into. That's where I do my checkbook.

Spinner Hold the iPhone vertical and then spin it to move the "ball" through a maze without touching the walls. Pretty fun.

ICE Store all your emergency info including medications, allergies, and emergency contacts. This is really good for my wife that has a lot of medical issues and medications.

Scribble Paint with only four colors and no other shapes than a circle. The coolest feature is the erase. You just shake the iPhone and the screen erases.
