Ok. Don't you think Movie 3 messed things up? How could Skynet be the internet when the nuclear holocaust would turn the surface of the Earth into glass and BAM, no more internet.
Silly idea.
The original idea was better, Skynet as a great quantum computer mainframe...that would eventually build a fortress around itself (a huge pyramid structure) with a T-1,000,000 as guard (a huge tentacled liquid metal monster).
From what I can remember of the books Skynet's fall was due to a double cross... a few of its human sympathizers gave critical information to the resistance which they used to shut down the outer defenses around Skynet's core and launch their final attack.
There was a cool scene in the book where Skynet is thinking on time travel and how to save itself...and only being able to calculate all the different dimensions and possible outcomes of sending the Terminators back in time because it was a quantum computer. But John Conner and the resistance would have to use Skynet itself to calculate the time jump for their own traveler.

Um, SkyNet didn't nuke the entire planet. Also, I don't think books are part of the original idea.

What do you mean? It sent nuclear missiles to every major city before assembling machines and attempting to mop up.

Well, the books are actually consistent with the ride at Universal Studios. Mostly. Insofar as the pyramid and the T-1000000 is concerned. Of course it's possible that the mainframe-fortress bit was built after Judgement Day (not the movie, the event)

Terminator has always been pretty fluid about timelines. Really, it's about how to have a great human interest story with lots of shiny robots and explosions at the same time.

Admittedly, nuclear explosions (with the attendant EMP) wouldn't exactly cry out as the first option for a psychotic supercomputer network to erradicate human life.
But then, I don't exactly go to Terminator movies for hardcore science fiction.

Skynet is just a fancy name for the Oversoul from the Homecoming series. After the initial war trilogy starring Christian Bale, the remaining humans will reprogram and tame Skynet and colonize a distant planet.
Until one day Skynet (the Oversoul) will start losing it's awesome powers. And then Skynet will have to call upon the humans with a peaceful motive to continue its existence.
