Anyone who disagrees with copyright protection is welcome to produce their own stuff without copyright and put it out there. Some people are doing it with Creative Commons and the like. Some people are making money with it.
If it can be shown to be a better way of doing things, more and more people will start to adopt it.
I think it's clear that it isn't the right way for everything to work. As has been pointed out many times, nobody is going to invest untold up-front costs in the creation of software or drugs or whatever and then let everyone else take all their profit.
I refuse to believe that it would happen, because it currently CAN happen, but nobody is doing it. Reality is telling us the story, as we speak. Things are changing in some areas, and not in others.
If anyone wants to show us otherwise, they're welcome to it. Have fun putting your millions into your non-patented drugs and tell us how that investment works out for you.
