Ron, I actually doubt they thought at all about copyright law let alone whether fair use applied. They just enjoyed the power of the xerox machine.

I had one teacher in high school who taught 'independent study' courses who photocopied entire textbooks. (Which is pretty funny because I'm sure the cost of 400 copies, and the time it would take to make them, rivaled the cost of a legit copy of the book.)
