My, there have been a lot of good movies this year. OSC said in his new article that Up is the best movie so far. . . .
Yeah, it's good, but I don't know that I can say it's the best. It may not even be the best animated movie.
I'm in a toss up between Coraline and Up for best animated movie. They were both in excellent 3D, and I saw up more recently, but I think Coraline's artistic and emotional impact were both slightly greater.
As for live action, it's a toss-up between Star Trek and Watchmen. And those are both certainly controversial choices. Watchmen was a little more bold and artsy and Star Trek was more entertaining. Hmm.
Best movie that I haven't seen? The new Sam Rockwell movie Moon. Too bad it's only getting limited release (and no scheduled showings in Utah). http://www.sonyclassics.com/moon/
And there's quite a few other winners coming. This is certainly the best year for movies in recent memory. But certainly my views are skewed. My favorite rentals this year have been Repo: The Genetic Opera and Choke.

I refuse to discuss best movie contenders this early in the year. I won't do it sooner than September.

But by saying that you refuse to discuss something, you're actually discussing it. If you say that you won't discuss Star Wars, and someone asks me what we were discussing, I'd say that we were discussing Star Wars. That's the topic of the conversation that you're participating in.

No, the topic would be whether he'd discuss Star Wars, not Star Wars itself. If you said you were discussing Star Wars, you would be mischaracterizing the discussion. And that would be discussting.

Only if you wanted to be fanatical about it. But then, you'd technically be a Star Wars fanatic . . . and no one would take you seriously anyway. So you might as well just talk about it.

Actually, the best time to discuss the best films of any particular year is some significant time after that year has ended.
Movies that we've seen recently tend to stick in our minds more. If we discuss this late in the year then movies that came out in January will be over looked. Not until a year or two after the fact can we look back at a year's movies evenhandedly and see what's stood the test of time, what makes us think, even today, and what was popcorn chewing entertainment and nothing more.

But it'll be too late to catch them in theaters, by then. We might as well wait until we're taking a class. Then no one would ever mention Land of the Lost. And IT has pop culture flair.

So far, I favor Knowing and the new Star Trek. But a number of promising films have not been released yet. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is due out July 15.

I may be alone in this but I really enjoyed Duplicity (I'm pretty sure that came out this year and I'm not horribly out of touch with time). I don't think it was the best, and it wasn't my favorite (probably have to give Star Trek the nod there), but I thought I would at least mention it.

None of the movies I saw that came out this year strike me as "great movie" material. Haven't seen "Up" yet though. Or "Coraline", but I'm not gonna watch that one anyway. I have seen both "Star Trek" and "Watchmen" and didn't think much about either of them. "Duplicity" might be the best movie I've seen so far. Oh, and a Swedish movie that isn't even going to be released in the US according to IMDb.

Watchmen, Brother's Bloom, Fanboys, Gran Torino, Taken, and "I love you , Man"
I wasnt a fan of Star Trek.
I wanted to watch Duplicity but never got around. Clive Owen was also great in Sin City and Inside Man.

"Fanboys", "Grand Torino" and "Taken" came out last year. If we include films that came out last year but I only saw this year things would change indeed. "Milk", "Seven Pounds", "Revolutionary Road", "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Traitor" came out this year in France and if I take them into account the movies I mentioned before have even less chances to be considered great. Ah, ok, IMDb says "Taken" came out in France first, and almost a year later in the US. And "Fanboys" was released just at some festivals in 2008, you're right.
