So I'm reading Churchill's memoirs, and I'm up to the invasion of Norway. I found this description rather amusing: "Norway, with its homely, rugged population engaged in trade, shipping, fishing, and agriculture..." Me, I'm feeling particularly homely and rugged today; how about you?

Maybe he was channeling Indian English, where homely means home-like or comfortable, and is a very positive adjective for most things & people.

I didn't think Churchill was calling anyone ugly. It just tickled my funny-bone to see the language change.
