I know there are a few of you on the board.
I am flying into LAX on Saturday and traveling south to visit family in Escondido.
My aunt is driving me back to LAX the following week, but cannot pick me up.
As I am traveling without the wife and daughter, I seem to have only two real options for getting down there, and was curious if I was missing anything. Train or car rental.
I see the metrolink trains and the Amtrak Surfliner will both get me to Oceanside pretty cheaply. (Should I buy Amtrak in advance if I do that?) But I probably wouldn't get to Escondido until 5pm.
Renting a car at LAX and dropping it off in Escondido would be about $115 it seems. Costs a lot more, but if traffic is friendly would get me there quicker.
Any other options out there?

There ain't no chance that the traffic won't suck the max most from LAX to Escondido. Hit rush hour (most of the daylight hours) or a traffic jam, and it's faster to bicycle between LAX and SanClemente.

Turns out Hertz will let me rent a car for a total price of $70 from LAX and leave it in Carlsbad. May go that route.

Saturday's good most of the time, ie as long as it isn't a 3day or holiday weekend. Just occasional weirdness like rubberneckers approaching traffic accidents and traffic jams for no discernible reason. But they don't happen often enough or last long enough to avoid driving.

In the future, you can find rental cars MUCH cheaper on priceline. I've gotten mid-sized cars (in LA) for 14 bucks a day.

One way to another destination? Thats the tricky part. I did use Priceline. If I brought it back to LAX it would be that cheap, but I am leaving it near Escondido. Apparently they need some extra money to bring it back or something.

Normally, I'd offer to feed you. But I'm eating lunch elsewhere this Shabbos.
I think you made that offer to me when I was out there 3 or 4 years ago, I may have taken you up on it this time.
