And it looks fantastic. Some people are complaining that John Carter and the Martians are wearing clothes but really no movie studio especially Disney were going to go that route.

I expected to hate it, but I really don't - it would be wonderful if this were good. There's such potential for interesting movies to be made of historical sci-fi that has largely been ignored.
So I'm glad that they haven't updated it. Slightly concerned that the aliens (what we see of them) look a bit ropey, but they still have time to work on that. And it's a shame they changed the title. 'John Carter' sounds more like a bio-pic than a full on science fiction picture.
And yes, pretty as the lead actor is, it would be rather unfair to make him be naked all the time. Cold too, I should imagine.

I deliberately didn't click the trailer on apple.com because I thought it was a historical movie.

Does this movie encompass the first three books? I would think that it would have to unless they are making it a weird trilogy.

As I recall (and it has been 30 years since I read them), the first two books end on cliffhangers.

Well I don't want to spoil it (even though the book was written a hundred years ago) for people who don't know but the first book is a self contained story book ended by a framing device.

Possible really vague spoilers * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The framing device cuts in at a really crucial part of the story. There are a lot of things hanging in the balance outside the "frame".

Well, it looks good to me. I've been waiting for someone to make a movie of these books since I was a kid more than 40 years ago. My first reaction to the shot of John Carter waking up on Mars was, "the ochre sea bottoms!" Woohoo! Can't wait!
