Has anyone here seen Shane Carruth's new movie Upstream Color? It's available through a variety of On-Demand or Download Options here and is also travelling around various theaters.
I am a huge fan of Shane Carruth's first film, Primer. I still re-watch it on occasion. I enjoy it's complexity and the fact that you're given just barely enough information to follow the story.
Upstream Color is equally as confusing as Primer, but with a very different subject matter. It's also incredibly beautiful. The music, the way things are filmed, the pacing, the sounds, all savory each on their own.

If I hadn't been determined to enjoy and benefit from it going in, I don't think I would've. But I was and I did, and I don't believe to be purely a case of self-enforced reaction either. I knew it was going to be a challenging film at the outset, and that there would be a lot hidden beneath the surface. Or hidden on the surface in a sea of chaos that would require great care to see clearly. But having done the hard work, I feel I was rewarded with a movie and experience that wasn't just unconventional, but was effectively unconventional. That said, I enjoyed Primer a great deal more. That has become part of my regular rotation, whereas Upstream Color is not likely to make it in.
I connected to the isolation and confusion of the characters that I think the film captured very well. I'm still not really clear what role the sampler had either metaphorically or in the reality of the movies...

I had no idea what the Sampler was doing, or how he was really connected to everything and everyone else, the first time I watched it. This (SPOILER-FILLED) New Yorker review goes into a lot of detail, and points out things that I never noticed and probably wouldn't have noticed even after several viewings.
