Right? And that's a good thing!
I think it's the worn in and industrial style of future tech, mixed with the comfortable approach to filming aliens. Make them highly defined but then waste a lot of it by not doing fetish shots, just film the alien like it wasn't special.

It sure is, I loved The Fifth Element and the humor. This one seems to be a little less "sophisticated", more light, but it looks like it's gonna be good.
What made me thing of TFE is the scene with those policemen with big guns, it's so similar I'm pretty sure TFE had to have an infulence here.

I'm getting a "Serenity" vibe from Starlord. He's a good crook, wears guns like a cowboy and just looks like he'd be wearing a browncoat.

I just hope that other, non-comic book following audiences will go and see this movie as well. Ironman, Thor, and Captain America all have more name recognition.
My father has read comic books since he was a kid, and he had never heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy. I knew who they were but had never picked up a comic.

People will watch this simply because it will connect to the Avengers plotline. Everyone loves those movies and they'll go simply because they don't want to miss out on a potential plot point. Also, the trailer just looks like it'll be a fun movie.

I'm not a comic follower except for movies, but I know who the Guardians of the Galaxy are for a very strange reason. They did a challenge on Tim Gunn's Under the Gun (like Project Runway but with a mentoring aspect) where they were to be inspired by the Guardians. X]

So, anyone managed to go see the actual movie yet? My husband went to look up times for the weekend and saw they had Thursday times, so we made it out last night with friends.
What a fun movie! Story? Check. Humor? Double check. Engaging characters? Check. Action? Check, check, check. It was was probably one of the most enjoyable films I've seen in a long time. I even teared up at one point, strange as that may sound, but I laughed WAY more often.

I saw it last night too at a free screening. I LOVED it. Really, really funny and entertaining the whole way through. I'll see it again.

Probably already my favorite Marvel movie, just edging out Avengers.
Totally different kind of movie, really. I can see how people would look at it and say they're the same, but this was really different. I haven't seen a good romp like that in a long time.

I think I liked Avengers more, but honestly, Guardians of the Galaxy was a better movie. I'm pretty sure nothing in my life has made me laugh hard than Hulk smashing Loki. Though, Drax's "my reflexes are too fast. I would catch it" comes in a close second.
Essentially, they're both team/ensemble superhero movies but while Avengers benefited from fleshing out most of its cast in solo movies and then really only having to work out the team dynamic, GotG had to introduce five anti-heroes and make the audience fall in love with them while showing us how they work together as a unit.
And everything just fell into place so well! Easily best soundtrack of the year and I love how they integrated it with the story and action. And seriously, every single team member had a bad-ass moment and a moment where I just really felt for them and understood where they were coming from. And I liked that they mixed up the pairings. That we got to see how Gamora and Peter interact. And how Peter is with Rocket. And how Rocket is with Drax, and so forth. It wasn't just limited Peter&Gamora or Rocket&Groot.
It was just a really well-made, interesting superhero movie.
And I loved all the tertiary castings.
My friend leaned over to point out Kirk from "Gilmore Girls" and I was so startled and pleased that I smacked her. Didn't realize the actor was the brother of the director.

There was also the second male actor from Roswell, the "bad boy" alien. He was a guard with no lines.
I was surprised by the last minute moment with John C. Reilly, it didn't feel forced but it was certainly unexpected. He could have been red, I wouldn't have cared.
