I don't know for sure what I want. But it'd be nice to have an allusion to a magical race in her book (like in just one line) or an allusion to some magical item she made, or to a character's exploits....

That sort of thing is definately legitamate. The ansible of _Ender's_Game_ is named after the ansible of Ursula Leguin's stories (which does the same thing). Similar examples abound.
So long as your not using a ton of details in a central way, you're fine. Just make sure you don't mislead the reader about the relationship between your world and the one you're refering to. Several readers built elaborate connections between the Makerverse and Middle Earth because of the dream in _Alvin_Journeyman_, none of which were OSC's intention.
