The basic intent of Liberty Hall has always been to get people writing. We use challenges to do so. The challenges actually started here, with djdvdakota's monthly challenge; first trigger provided by Kathleen. Some of us with shorter attention spans need a more frequent challenge, so we started the Liberty Hall weekly challenges.
In case any one ever wonders if writing challenges work, look what we've done so far! By April 1, the end of our first year, Liberty Hall will have generated over 850 stories.
We're celebrating with a Year One Flash Challenge and Kathleen has agreed to provide the trigger.

Wow, Mike! 850. I wonder how many of those have gone on to be published. I know my first published piece was from the SCC challenge over there.

The best part is that it gets better every week. All of it. The stories get better, the writers get better.
And its not a small pool of people. I think there are about 25-30 people participating at varying degrees of regularity and many of them are published authors.

By my estimate, approximately 10 stories that were flash have been published and another 15 to 20 are wending their way through the submission process.
Doesn't sound like much, does it? 10 But for many - not all - of those 10, they were first-time publications.

Ten pieces that would have never been published, though. You can add one more to the making the rounds list. I wrote one called "The Waiting" forever ago (I think it was flash #17). I did a rewrite for the SCC polish challenge and am now in the throws of getting it re-re-polished to send out for a contest. It's truely amazing the lives these little stories take on.

About 25 were mine. Of those, I'm still in love with about 10. Not bad at all, considering they'd never have been written otherwise. I rewrote 2 of them for WOTF, both of which placed QF. I need to rewrite about 6-8 more of them and get them out there. So much to do, so little BIC. Sigh.

Hey, I know they work, and sorry I haven't had time to really participate in your challenges. Anything that gets a writer to write is no waste of time.

The only novel I ever finished was for NaNoWriMo, and ofwhat few Flash Challenges I did (around 6, I think) I think I managed to finish at least 75% of them, so deadlines seem to work for me.
