Got a quick question. Would you guys mind if I posted a few of my students' poems here? I'm trying to encourage them to write a bit and get some feedback. Some of them are genuinely interested in writing. They'd be posted under my name, but I'd name each author. We're only talking two or three, four at the outside. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Should I post it here or in Fragments and Feedback?

You might want to talk it over with Kathleen and see what she thinks. kdw@hatrack.com according to the main forum page.

I'd be leery of it... I'd think you would have better success having these students do peer review/critiques. We don't tend to cut high school kids any slack here, and it's not always best for them to take unvarnished critique at a point in their lives when their writing skills are just budding. It would be sad to crush the rose before it's had a chance to fully bloom.
My other thought is this is a forum for fiction writers of fantasy and science fiction. We frankly aren't that well versed in poetry (no pun intended.) We might have opinions, but whether our opinions would be useful to the students to help them improve is a bit iffy.

If what Gnome is looking for is an avenue in which to show these students what they can expect from the 'real world' of writing, then I really don't see a problem with it, BUT I would like to see it posted more as an, "I have some students that I'd like obtain some critiques for. Would anyone be interested? Email me." sort of thing than to actually post them on the site.

Would you also be filtering the comments? Because that seems to be the main function of not having your students post here themselves. In any case, I would go with djv's suggestion and screen your critic group first. Because if you post something here and us insensitive types start ripping on it, you can't do anything to prevent your students from seeing our comments.

I've been posting on the assumption that everybody posting here is adult enough to take mild-but-firm criticism. (I'm none too sure about savage criticism, but I try to avoid doing that in any case. In any case, I'm rarely present on Fragments and Feedback, though I occasionally look things over or add one of my own.) If you do, your students will have to be able to take that.
I've got to go along with some of the other comments, though, that there's probably better places to try posting them...

Pantros is probably right; Notebored is likely a much better venue for this; there's more poetically inclined folk there, and the sight is geared toward being comfortable for young writers as well as the more experienced.
