Anybody heard back yet?

EDIT: Obviously, I mean Q306. Mentally, I'm stuck in 2005.

Still waiting. However, if I remember correctly, for the Q3 2005, I was notified mid-October.

Writers of the Future, 3rd Quarter of 2006.

Writer's of the Future is a speculative fiction contest. It's one of the more prominent contests, so you'll see it referred to a lot on fiction boards. It has 4 contests every year, so there are four WOTF quarters.

By the way, Chris, I wouldn't worry too much about hearing back from them. The story I sent them is pretty great, and I'm planning on winning this time around. I guess you could still shoot for second place, though.

I'd be happy with second. Heck, I'm just hoping that the story is worth at least a quarterfinalist status, otherwise I'm going backwards. If anything, WOTF is a form a feedback.

Interesting news on sff.writing.writersofthefuture:

Could somebody enlighten me on this rule:

4. The Contest is open only to those who have not had professionally published a novel or short novel, or more than one novelette, or more than three short stories, in any medium. Professional publication is deemed to be payment, and at least 5,000 copies, or 5,000 hits.

How do you know if you've been "professionally published?" When you have stories published in ezines, how do you know if you've had over 5000 hits? I can see being able to find out the number of print magazines, but the other would be kind of hard to determine if the ezine doesn't keep a counter for each individual issue. I doubt if anything I've been in has that many hits, but I'm curious as to how it's determined.

Ask Kathy Wentworth, the first reader...

Usually she hangs out on:

And every week or so seems to answer most questions, even stupid ones, like mine...

Didn't submit. Have in the past...might in the future...but didn't right now. Frankly I'm suspicious of them. Poke around this site, posts about a year old, and you might find the details.

So, do they send out rejection letters too? And do they send them out in an order- like the rejections first last so you can guess if you haven't heard by a certain time it is bad?

I've had a no-place sent after semi-finalists were notified, and I've had a QF over three weeks before the deadline for the next quarter passed. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to the order of notification. None.

Yeah, same. Although as a semi-finalist I had to query both times to be notified (but the second time there were a few problems with my SASE that "forced" the query pretty early).

I've heard, though, that all the finalists get a phone call on roughly the same day (give or take a day), but having never been in this situation I can't comment
