Welcome to this week's Novel Support Group (NSG). Anyone can join. If you're new, tell us a bit about who you are and what project you are working on. Feel free to update the NSG Work in Progress thread with your current projects. Although we can report on any number of things, here is a list of suggestions (suggestions welcomed).

  • What were your goals last week and did you accomplish them?
  • Describe what you worked on.
  • Set goals for next week.
  • Did you learn something during this week?

Here is a list of things that you can do each week as we work on our novels (suggestions welcomed).

  • Writing on a novel
  • Characterization
  • World Building
  • Relevant research

Last Week's Goals

I'm reading one book right now that I'm having serious difficulty continuing. I really do not like spending 150 pages (about 1/3 of the book) reading about a specific group of characters and all of a sudden we start "Part 2" and we are introduced to a completely new set of characters. I've spent the last 50 pages reading about these new characters. The only "relation" these new character have to the old group is that the new characters live in the city to which the old characters intend to visit. Other than that, I don't care about the new characters.
</soapbox>

My goals for next week:

  • Read

Continue reading, likely another book entirely.

What did I learn this week?

Nothing still.

Last Week's Goals:

MAGIC'S FOOL (Working Title): Nothing for this week again.
Easy goal.

MAGE STORM: Send out at least three more queries.
Nope. Looking over a minor revision to chapters 2 and 3 first, basically moving a few incidents around for a better escalation.

SEVEN STARS: Complete this round of revisions.
Yep.

BLOOD WILL TELL: Send out two more queries.
Yep.

OTHER:
Update my blog twice a week.
Go over the WotF story again.
Yes to the first, no to the second.

Next Week's Goals:

On the Shelf:
THE IGNORED PROPHECY
DREAMER'S ROSE

MAGIC'S FOOL (Working Title):
I'd like to at least go back and look over what I've written, maybe finish chapter 3. Not sure that's going to happen, though.

MAGE STORM:
Complete the revision and start sending out queries again.

SEVEN STARS:
Get another reader or two for this draft.

BLOOD WILL TELL:
Send out two more queries.

OTHER:
Update my blog twice a week.
Go over the WotF story again. Really.

====
I've got one excellent reader on this draft of SEVEN STARS, but I'm open to another chapter exchange. Anybody?

Well since I’m new to this I guess I’ll tell you a little about myself. I’m a full time mother and trainer at a telecommunications company so writing is definitely something that I have little time for. It eats up all my spare moments and I find myself often writing while eating lunch, on my breaks and after the kids are down.

My current projects are a high fantasy novel that I have not named yet and several short stories to grow my skills.

This week I finished a chapter that had been giving me problems and am moving on to the next scene.

I started a short story and have put in 1100 words today but don’t have a name for this one yet either.

My goals for next week:

Novel – To finish the next scene and figure out my issue with transportation. I am also going to submit my first 13 lines for review and to see if I can find a reader.

Short Story – Finish the story and send it in for critique and revision.

I have learned a lot this week because I just found this forum. Already I have come up with two new story ideas for short stories. The most important thing I learned is to continue writing and not get bogged down in the research.

Didn't quite meet my goal this week, revising 5 scenes instead of 8. However, I did get past one that was giving me problems, so I'm pleased about that. My word count is also still dropping (below 118k now!).

Next week, I really am going to get to the end (4 scenes--turns out I miscounted last week), and then I want to go back to a tricky scene that's been eluding me for awhile and fix it so I don't have anyone acting out of character to make it happen. This may require expanding it to multiple scenes.

I didn't get anywhere close to my goals this week, but I blame shopping for college and the stomach flu. On the positive, I rewrote all of Chapter 2 for consistency reasons, and I think I've solved a problem as to how to tell a story in a story (i.e the main character is watching an important play). This week I hope to write 5,000 words a day. Good luck to everyone!!! And many thanks to Wonderbus, the best critique buddy ever
