This is a fantastic paragraph. Man, I love his delivery here.

"In the winter the big black stove pumps out heat fragrant with driftwood or peat, and everything steams and the rain hammers against the glass. Then it has a comfortable, closed-in feeling, making you feel cozy, like a great big cat with its tail curled around itself. Sometimes I wish we had a cat. All I've ever had was a head, and that the seagulls took."

I love all of banks' SF books, but I only just got round to reading some his non-SF stuff, and Wasp Factory is by the far the best of them IMHO.

It's a classic example of how to write in the bad guy's POV. Despite the MC's sociopathic tendencies, I still felt sympathetic to him.

I have never read Banks sci-fi stuff.
Of his non-sci-fi, I'd agree, Wasp Factory is the best...for me anyway.
