I read a book several years ago. It was a fantasy book that took place in modern times--a city to be exact. There were a lot of bad guys who were normal, a character named Crow Girl (not the main character), and a lot of characters who could shape-shift. In fact in the opening scene someone is about to be brutalized and is saved by the main character. At the end I think there was something happening to the city, like it was going to be destroyed and some of the "good guys" save it.
Sorry, that's all I have to go on. For some reason I have a tough time remembering the titles of books. I need to get better at that.

Searching through Google turned up two possibilities: The Crow Girl (the plot doesn't seem to fit), and The Crow: The Temple of Night (maybe a better fit), both listed at Amazon-dot-com, if you want to take a look.

Thanks, Robert, but no dice. These two came up when I did my own search and neither one is it. I don't believe there is the word "crow" in the title at all, and like I said, "Crow Girl" was one of the secondary characters in the book. Hmmm. I believe at that time I was trying to read a bunch of books off a web site that posted the top 100 fantasy/sf books according to user rankings. Maybe if I find that list again, I can figure out which book it was.

I'm thinking maybe Samuel Delany's Dhalgren might fit the plot as described, but my memories of it are vague (if I finished it at all, which I don't remember). An entry on Wikipedia didn't help much: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhalgren
Aside: I didn't like this when I read it (and maybe didn't finish it), but I was fourteen or fifteen when I got a copy. Since then, and in recent years, I've found some stuff I didn't care for at that age had improved considerably when I picked them up years later. Perhaps I'm old enough to handle this kind of work now.
