Ever think about trying key rings? You can buy rings in bulk at craft shops, and they come in various sizes. It might be a way to make steel mesh without needing an anvil.

There are suppliers (like urbanmaille, and theringlord) who sell rings for chain mail in everything from plastic, copper, silver, gold, steel, niobium, and a couple of others. For learning, though, (which is where I still am with this) aluminum is the most practical. Easy to bend and inexpensive.
I intend to try copper next, even if I have to make some of my own rings. I know how to do that, too.
