I was thinking about the fact that Peter is never indicated as getting married in the books Zenocide and such. It seems to me that in the world of politics the one thing that cannot be avoided is the need to seem to have family values. [Big Grin]

It is straight from Machiavelli, the Prince must seem virtuous to the public.

Now it occurs to me that when Bean dies, Petra will be a widow with a child and Peter would look awful good as a husband. He is a world power, attractive and smart. I think they should get together.

So who else thinks that it would be cool, a marrige of politics and convinence that leads to love, passion, anger and betrayls? Peter trying to live up to "The Shadow of the Giant" meaning both Ender in the public forum, and Bean in his love life with Petra.

After all if all parts of Bean keep growing... he might be a hard act to follow. [Evil]

i agree with farmgirl
to have someone like peter marry petra would just be... distasteful, to say the least in my opinion.
and i dont think that petra would ever honestly consider the possibility...
, maybe the fact that peter didnt get married or have any connections is becuase they would be a great weakness...the wife thing would only work to his benefit in a time of peace. because like achillies attempted to take petra from bean...enemies of peter could take his significant other. peter is too smart to even set himself up for that possibility

OSC said at the Cinci book signing that "it should be obvious to anyone who's read the books" that Petra will marry Peter after Bean dies. At which point all of the people I was with looked at each other and said "it wasn't obvious to us!" and were generally very shocked. But it's his book, so I suppose he's allowed to marry his character's to whoever he wants to.

Hey! It's not a "fact" yet that Bean dies. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that it is some false info to throw people off and completely surprise them. I feel that Bean dying would be a serious blow to the series. The "Shadow" series, to me is better. I'm sitting here right now trying to think of why I like Bean more then Ender, but I can't find it. Maybe I can relate more to Bean. Maybe I just root for the underdog, I dunno, but it would truly disappoint me to lose Bean.

I can see that marriage happening. Think of it as not a "real" marriage, but more like the marriage between Paul Atretes and the princess in Dune.

Wow OSC and I think alike, hardly surprising I guess. I am always happy to entertain you Blackwolf. [Laugh]

I see the Marriage of Peter and Petra as a political alliance of a sort, like the one of Paul and Irulan at the end of Dune, but you could also think of it as being like Jackie Kennedy and Whats his Onasis, basically a marrige for security. Only a powerful man will be able to create the kind of safe bubble where Petra could raise Bean's kids.

Imagine the Irony of Peter desperate to win Petra's true love and affection bends his power to locating Bean's children and then Petra having them one after another and never giving Peter a child! Perhaps because Peter forces her into the marriage by pointing out that it is her only safe haven, and then uses it to strengthen himself politically.

Peter might have affairs with beautiful pop stars and actresses and Petra would go on having a dozen children by Bean just to spite him. [Grumble]

Then he might do something that truely makes her realize he is worthy of her love and it will be too late, too much damage and pain under the bridge! [Cry]

To Miro, Why should I put a spoiler warning in for a theory? You are welcome to hold another one until the probability wave collapses into reality. [Taunt]

The fact that the post was titled Petra and Peter indicates the series and the only thing revealed is that Bean is doomed to die which we learn in the first book.

Well also the fact of frozen children, still its not like Shadow Puppets is new!

****SPOILER**** Well I'm still keeping my fingers crossed about the fact that Carlotta's body was never found. Maybe she was just biding her time or had amnesia or something or didn't make it onto the plane but sent someone else onto the plane and is currently in hiding at the Vatican. I don't know. But I still say there's a chance that Carlotta's still alive.

To this all I have to say is, Who Cares? Her death is far more interesting as a character development factor for Bean then her continued existence would be. She was an old Nun who showed Bean the meaning of love and gave him the insight to let his hatred of Achilles go. What else has she got left to do? One might say that she even saved the world by recruiting Bean. Let her be dead.

Bean is all grown up and does not need a chaperone.

I think that's a little rude. Obviously I care. And if I care so should everyone else in this world! [Wink] Seriously though, I thought she was a really great character and I think it would be a really sweet moment if right before Bean died he got to see her one last time. [Dont Know] If you don't care, fine. But don't get all hostile about it.

Sorry if it was rude it is a tendency I have developed to generate response one needs to come down hard on one side or another. It is not that I am generally hostile to people named Julie or nuns.

After all who can agree or dissagree with Maybe this, maybe that. It is the Demostenese method I suppose. Rhetoric.

I still think her death was a nice way to use the character after she was used up.

I have to agree with Bean Counter. If people keep coming back from the dead in a series, then death becomes meaningless. Without meaninful death, then the characters can never be in peril, and dramatic tension flies out the window.

This seems to be a very common problem in serial media -- the artists give the audience what it wants, and then it turns out mediocre. There can't be noble sacrifice nobody loses anything meaningful.

I wouldn't put too much thought into what OSC says at book signings. He once told me, to my face, that he will never do another book exploring the Ender/Descolada story line because he felt that story is finished. Well, I'm glad he changed his mind. [Smile]
