I was recently re-reading Shadow of the Hegemon and I noticed a contradiction in the number of members of Ender's Jeesh.

NOTE: This is not the same contradiction found in this thread.

All ref.'s are to the Tor paperback edition, pages 78-80:

Achilles says: "Ten of you. Only two missing from the glorious victory."... (p. 78)

Which makes sense. There are 12 members of the Jeesh -- Ender, Bean, Petra, Dink, Carn, Fly Molo, Han Tzu, Vlad, Dumper, Alai, Shen, and Crazy Tom. And Ender and Bean are not present, as Achilles says later on the same page, making 10.

But on page 80, Achilles announces that the jeesh is being separated. The text says: "The soldier left. They heard a few words of Russian and at once sixteen soldiers came in and divided up, one pair to each of the kids."

sixteen soldiers / two per kid = eight kids

But didn't OSC just establish that there were TEN kids present in the room? And nothing is hinted or given as to any of the kids -- not even Petra -- staying behind with Achilles.

Let it slide. It was obviously the copyeditor's fault. wink-wink, nudge-nudge

My suggestion is to open the book to that page, take out a fine tipped sharpie, mark out the 16 and replace it with 20.

Problem solved.

You must understand this is just the Lathe of Heaven. Mr. Card will tear out his hear for the sins against Gene Roddenberry. God rest your ashes amoungst the starts Gene.

(Speaking of which to all those who like Mr. Card, you should infact read "The Lathe of Heaven." you'll understand what I mean, and its similar heady Sci-fi goodness, just like Orson does it. Mmmmm-mmmm, good old fashion 1970's Sci-fi.)

"...and at once sixteen soldiers came in and divided up, one pair to each of the kids."

Just a typo. The other vers. say twenty. Twenty, sixteen, look the same to me.

I think it's logical to assume that Senior OSC made an accident and made a mistake thinking that the 2 missing was to be subtracted from the ten count... but idk, who know? who cares? lol.

Peace,
Aphotic

Oh, Sorry. Ugh, Card hated Gene's series, "Star-Trek," and if you read his article, he launched every atttack he could on the series. He said that it was poorly acted, poorly filmed, and poorly written. The only thing Card dosen't understand is that the original Star-Trek was filmed with a budget of 1,000 dollars a week. Even in 1950, that wasn't a good budget for making TV. The show's one camera costed 500 alone. And after that, it kinda became customary to film the show with one camera. Sorta like how after the first Godzilla, the creators could have upgraded the technology, but that's not what the fans wanted. I mean c'mon, the movie was done with a guy in a crummy rubber suit, with bad voice over effects. But people loved that.
