I'm glad you asked, Pat. Let me illuminate you, sans burnination.
Mafia is forum-based game based on a pretty fun party game. Anywhere from 12 to 20 people are needed and are split into three teams.
Team one is the largest, consisting mainly of the TOWNSPEOPLE. These are the good guys. They try and figure out who among them are the bad guys.
The bad guys are the MAFIA. They comprise a fourth to a fifth of the total population. In the MAFIA ranks there is a leader, who we lovingly refer to as the GODFATHER. The GODFATHER has a neat little trick that we'll talk about later.
So, the game begins with a dawn of the new day. At the dawn, the townies who comprise the good guys as well as the concealed bad guys in their midst, learn of the most recent mafia hit. They then, based on the clues provided in the written kill by the moderators, must come to a conclusion of who they are going to lynch. The hope is that the townies lynch a mafia member. The mafia's quest is to sway public opinion in the townspeople's ranks in an effort to kill all the townies off before their true identities are found out.
Of course, the mafia also gets to kill townies once a day, too.
But the townies get two people to help them swing the game back into their favor. They are:
The SHERIFF: Before the townies go to sleep, the Sheriff is allowed to know if someone in the townie membership pool is in fact a member of the mafia. All mafia members then are subject to the sheriff's gaze except THE GODFATHER, who retains special special powers of deception.
THE DOCTOR: Before the Mafia chooses to kill someone, The Doctor can choose to save someone. Anyone. If the doctor chooses the same person the mafia kills, that person lives.
And remember that third team I mentioned earlier? It's a one-man show. He's called the SERIAL KILLER. The SERIAL KILLER'S quest is simple. He gets to kill one person a day, in an effort to win the game for himself, or herself.
When there are more mafia members than townspeople, then, the mafia wins. When all the mafia is dead, then the townies win. If the serial killer is the last man standing, then he/she wins.
So, there you have it. The internet's funnest game by far.
Now, I'll turn the time over to you, the Hatrack audience, for testimonials.

Don't look at me, Rivka. I'm not going near that psychological trainwreck.
But I AM going to sign up for mafia! Who else is going to follow my stellar example? Anyone? Anyone? Rivka?

Well, I just figured that you had experience in the whole talking-to-yourself(ves) department . . .

Purim is Sunday. At this point, I would normally know exactly who I'm giving shalach manos or sending cards, and have everything about 3/4 ready. I've barely started (due to all the other complications going on in my life of late).
Legal issues have progressed; but must be kept on top of.
Issues with middle child are FINALLY progressing, but right now actually require MORE time, not less.
Job hunting.
I really need to get more sleep -- falling asleep when I've sat down for "just a minute" while taking care of stuff in the evening, winds up being REALLY uncomfortable.
IOW, I should be finding ways to cut back on Hatrack, but have yet to successfully manage that. (I have cut back on some of the other online stuff I do.) Signing up for something new, OTOH . . .

(((Rivka))) take care. Maybe things will have calmed down in time for Antiques Roadshow Mafia.

Does that mean that Slash doesn't understand the appeal, since he has never played? Or is the appeal to others that Slash has never played?

I thought you were sending out roles tomorrow...doesn't that mean that we need to get our profiles up before then?

But people aren't signing up in the droves that I want them to, so roles may go out on Saturday.

Oh ok then...well, I just posted my profile.
Come on guys! How can you pass up an opportunity like this one? I mean, it's Little House on the Prairie! And with moderators like Pat and Hobbes...honestly! You just can't pass it up!

We're still missing profiles from jeniwren, Nathan, Brinestone, Zan, fugu, saxon, and several others.
Ten are signed up right now. It would be good to get twice as many, but we could probably pull it off with fifteen or sixteen.
And I've settled on prizes. I'm going to start grabbing books, cds and videos off the Deseret News's freebie table and will post a separate thread of available prizes which I will ship out to the winners. There is some good stuff there sometimes. Sometimes there isn't. But it's free, and it's for the winners.

Do you have to have special stuff on your PC, Trog, like IM? Cause I can't make that work. I do have e-mail. And I think I'd like to be a serial killer and blow off some steam . . . (a pun, people, a pun)

I'd love to join in but won't be being on a completely different time zone (i.e. GMT - 5 hours ahead of Eastern) make it impossible to play along?
Though I do tend to turn into a Nightowl at weekends - kills me for the following week - but I'm hooked on Hatrack
