I just tried going to Hatrack through Explorer and I got a page - something about Apache software - saying if I was seeing it the site was having problems.
I did the same thing on AOL and merely ended up with a nasty and vulgar message that looked like the site had been hacked - "Spykids ownzzz your security, etc."
I was able to get in by accessing the URL of the message board through my "history" list. Apparently, I only get stopped if I go to just plain old "hatrack.com" - anybody else notice this?
Are we gonna be down soon for a purging of invading hacker stuff?

I'm sure as hell not going to Hatrack.com to test it. Report your post have them check it out...

I got the message when I first signed on too. Speaking of obscene language--Cheney would be proud!

Frankly--and I don't mean to be rude or one of those surly oldbies--I think we've covered that topic sufficiently today.

No, saxon, I don't think you get it. See, Cheney recently used the "f" word in the Senate. And the "f" word is on the front page. So since Cheney said that word, he'd probably approve of its use by these hackers. Get it? Not only is it a keen insight, but it's a scathing political commentary, too. High comedy, no doubt.

at least they only hacked the main page, and did not take the forums down...though the admins and mods should change their passwords, since if they felt like it they could have downloaded the UBB password files so they can log in as admins/mods and mess with things at a later date.

No, it really was not my intention to be rude or surly. I just think that that topic has proven to be rather inflammatory, and I would really prefer to limit the opportunity for heated fighting.
If you think I was being intentionally rude then I apologize.

Well, I reported my own message with a brief note (I think I blew the whistle on a post all of once - the original post gets included in the message to the mod, right?)
See what happens...

I was hoping the hackers could search the UBB userlist and give us a definitive list of all users and their alternative logins. Maybe we'll find that only 30 of us are real.

If it's an Apache server, it's not going to have the problems that people using Microsoft IIS are having. It won't mess up your computer, even if you visit the page with Internet Explorer.
Silly little hacker kiddies.

In fact, there are an estimated 15-20 people doing all the posting here. The rest are screen names for their "alter egos." There are entire threads that are composed of nothing more than one individual "talking" with his or her alters.

Has anyone emailed the admins about this? And what kind of a person would do this to hatrack???

I bet the password file is encrypted. Although even with a list of encrypted passwords it may be possible for hackers to write themselves cookies that allow them to be logged on. Still, changing passwords is frequently a good idea after something like this.

I just now tried the main page on aol here at home and it came up clean. Looks like maybe they changed the locks on the front door.

I doubt it, I used to run a UBB board and the password file was not encrypted...they had you put in in a directory that could not be accessed via the website (ie: you needed FTP access to get to it) but since they changed the index file they have FTP access. We don't use UBB anymore though, so things might have changed.
Another thing the admins need to be careful of, is it would be possible for the person to create new admin accounts for themselves. This is easy to double check (just make sure that there are no accounts that have admin access that should not have it).
All of this is rather unlikely...it would be a lot effort to go through, unless the job was personal (rather than someone just screwing around with a popular site)

so, is there a windows-based browser that is less vulnerable to these security problems? and free?

Oooh Look! OSC has written the intro to a new edition of When the Sleeper Wakes by H. G. Wells!!! WOW!
One of my favorite stories of all time. I'm dying to read what he says about it.
I actually proposed that my family band together and start a multi-generational bank account and keep it going as a legacy for the next several hundred years just to see if we would end up owning EVERYTHING like that guy in the story did.

Well, don't listen to me, I got my investment idea from a science fiction story about a guy who fell asleep and woke up owning the world.
