That song has been popular for over 6 months now Kat. In fact, it was actually overplayed on the radio here, and they only play it now and then because of that. Yeah, I like Modest Mouse a lot, and that song was in my head for a month straight. When its on the radio now I don't get that excited, because I've heard it so many times.
I'm not sick of Ocean Breathes Salty, because they didn't play it as much as Float On. I think its a better song too .

This is why you must change the station religiously. Also, have you ever tried internet radio? Launchcast still has commercials, but they come one or two at a time instead of in ten-minute blocks. I've discovered lots of good stuff through Launch.

Well...it just seems like there is so much to know. I know a little about music, but only classical, opera, and a little bit of 60s folk music (a la A Mighty Wind) from my dad.
It just looks like so much work. Flip the channel, figure out what to listen to, replace in a month or so because it gets old. Reading about it doesn't help because there's no attached sound files, such a short shelf life. There are almost 30,000 music CDs published every year, and I like almost all genres so I wouldn't want to specialize. What an overwhelming hobby!

Um, no. IDE is the type of connection that typical desktop hard drives use. You won't have one, let alone room in your laptop to install the drive. You'd need a USB hard drive.

I'm more fond of The World at Large and Ocean Breathes Salty than Float On, but Modest Mouse to me is an all-around enjoyable band. It's been a good year or so for alternative music, with the most recent Modest Mouse, Muse, and Beck (if you can actually classify him as anything) albums coming out.

But, yeah, it's 109GB at the moment. Mostly mid-to-high-quality WMA, which is another reason why I don't want to just burn her an audio CD or two. *grin* Although I'm half-tempted to make her a mix, now that I know how enthusiastic she is about Modest Mouse.
Since my PC is also my stereo and DVD player, I tend to rip any CD I buy and any DVD I feel like watching frequently to my hard drive, mainly for convenience; this allows me to store the actual media in my basement and only haul it out for car rides. Disk space is cheap; I'm spanning across two 300GB WDs.

Katie, I love Guster's "Airport Song"! Listen for the ping pong balls at the end. And if you like that, I recommend checking into everything else by them.
Tom: I'm just trying to make myself feel better about my collection of 100 or so CDs. Of course, my last roommate had well over 300, I think, and my roommate before that had well over 200 DVDs. But an entire wall? That's just shameful. *shakes head sadly*

I was thinking about that song (Float On) today. I'm like you and don't listen to the radio so if it weren't for a friend I wouldn't have known about it! A friend of mine has The Moon and Antarctica and it's pretty good, I haven't heard any other stuff by them though.

Hey Ya still holds the record for a single song (3 days of continuous play), although the soundtrack to The Hunchback of Notre Dame (don't laugh - it's fabulous) stayed in my CD player the longest (over a year).

This is one example where it's much better to buy an album than listen to a single on the radio. Float On is a great song, but it sounds even better when played immediately after The World At Large. Much like Santana's No One To Depend On or Alan Parsons' Eye In the Sky (among others), it's an excellent culmination of what the band has been working up to with the preceding song, and it just doesn't work quite as well as a single.
I agree with the following two statements from this thread: The Moon and Antarctica is MM's best album, and Franz Ferdinand's first disc is fantastic.
And I'm glad to hear that Tom has a bigger CD collection than I do. I'm close to 60 GB of 128mb/s mp3s (ripped from CDs, not downloaded), and as proud as I am of the collection, sometimes I feel like I'm getting a bit carried away. Yep. My favorite is Heaven's Light/Hellfire. It's rather intense for a disney cartoon, but it was during that scene that I knew I loved the movie. It's a depiction of the best and the darkest. I also liked that Esmerelda didn't end up with either. For both Quasi and Frollo, she wasn't real, but a catalyst for change.

I tried listening to the radio this morning, and I now remember the real reason I don't do it.
Oh my STARS, there is so much CRAP out there!!
In thirty minutes, I heard maybe one song that I liked that I hadn't heard before, and it was on a country station! Hatrack, I listened to "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul! AAAAA!!
NOT worth it. I believe that I'm missing the occasional fabulous song, but I am also missing a huge volume of really, really bad music. I'm very okay with this.

I don't listen to the radio either. Listening to the radio is bad advice, in my opinion. Radio sucks. They *occasionally* play something good, like Modest Mouse, but most of the time they don't.
It's much better to just listen to tapes and cd's, that way you know you'll hear good music, and it isn't just a crap shoot.

If you like Modest Mouse, check out Sharpen Your Teeth by Ugly Cassanova. Same people, and almost the same kind of music.
Also check out the CD Building Something Out of Nothing. It doesn't get as much mention as Good News for People Who Love Bad News or The Moon and Antarctica, but it's one of my favorite CDs.
If you're looking for deeply personal music, check out Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith. I recommend the songs "Gold Mine Gutted" and "Memory Lane", respectively. Both artists are a little more direct than Modest Mouse (Bright Eyes more than Elliott), but their songs aren't quite as catchy.
