That's cute. I already have a 15G iPod, and see no reason why I'd want less capacity. . . but. . .

...woah...

...so pretty...

I love the classic white ipod design and now they've gone and shrunk it. Very nice. Not enough capacity for me (*hugs 40GB*) but I can see this selling really well.

Meh...I have an iRiver 1 GB and it is awesome. I like the fact that I have a FM tuner, voice and in-line recording capability. The sound quality of the iRiver is superior to the iPod as well.

I recently won an ipod in a raffle. At the time I thought it was funny because I didn't want one and thought I had no use for one. I had many people offer to buy it when I said this.

Now that I have it, I love it, and I can't believe I didn't want it.

My PDA plays mp3s. I doubt highly I will ever buy an mp3 player. I don't see the point, given the expense. I do wish I had more than the 1+ gig I have. Do they make flash cards bigger than 1 gig? I don't need twenty or forty gigs. Just two or three would probably make me completely happy.

Do those flash cards cost nearly as much as an entire standalone handheld music player with even more flash capacity?

Can I now hope that the flash cards will come down in price or that I will have a reasonable opportunity to shoplift one [Wink] ? Yes.

Do those standalone units remind me of my appointments, track my calories, show slideshows of my pictures, access the internet, run M$ Office applications, play video games, record sounds, share data with my PC, and work as a telephone?

Told ya [Razz]

Also, while the all in one has its perks, there are good economic and social reasons to suspect that most people will not choose all such functionality bundled together. For one thing, this has historically not been true; take a look at how people organize multimedia in their homes, for instance.

Those features are indeed very cool. This new iPod and that iRiver are both way too small for me (I have a 30GB iPod and it's only got about 4GB of free space), but my plug-in FM tuner sucks battery juice like there's no tomorrow. I'm planning to buy a car adapter, because I love having it on road trips.

Added: Also, the unit's physical size (or lack thereof) is not a selling point for me. I wear very large earmuff-style headphones.

hmm . . . Froogle has them as low as $120. I'd rather pay under $100, but still not a bad price, it would seem . . .

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=%22secure+digital+memory%22+2gb&scoring=p

Any warnings regarding buying them from a brand I don't know, like Patriot Extreme Performance, or buying from a vendor I'm not familiar with, like newegg.com?

fugu, you may be right about most people, but what I'm describing is something I already have and have been using for at least three years. I specifically need an all-in-one (or nothing at all . . . I don't need an mp3 player) because I won't carry or keep track of a lot of different things. I waited to buy a PDA until I could get one that was also a phone for just this reason. Finding the one I bought has quite literally changed my life. [Smile]

I think the most amazing part of this whole announcement is Apple's ability to manipulate the press.

For the last few weeks we've been bombarded by story after story about the iTunes phone. I got so sick of hearing about a product that most people would never even take a second look at. I was very pleased to see that the iTunes phone was just a front for the biggest iPod release since the original iPod.

It's even funnier to see the press' unwillingness to let the iTunes phone go and cover the real story.

We're going down to the store tomorrow to have a look-see.

*applauds Apple*

I just bought an 20GB iPod Photo. I was very torn about what brand to buy. I have always harbored a deep hatred for all things apple but I'm very happy with the iPod. In fact the darn little thing is amazingly cool. I would have to agree about the nano's size. It's way to small. I've got nearly 60 gig of music on my hard drive and even my 20GB iPod will require me to do a lot of swapping. I can't imagine having only 4 gig.

I'm with Icarus on this one. I do not need an mp3 player, although I enjoy that feature of my (still pretty new) Tungsten E. I prefer not to have my phone be part of my Palm, but I'm happy to have it do everything else.

I have the free 128 card that came with my Palm (backing up and a couple dozen songs) and I bought a 1G card a couple months ago. (After sale and rebate it was something like $60.)

When I am sufficiently bored of the current songs on it, I swap in new ones. On the small card I mostly have songs that I don't want often, but will be keeping. (Like Lehrer's The Elements, which I need for school. And Have a Little Priest (from Sweeney Todd), which I like to listen to every once in a while.)

I have a 30 gig Ipod (gen 3) and I really would like to move to the 60 gig photo Ipod. Mine stays full, and since I've had it for 2 years the battery life stinks, but I listen mainly in the car so it's a non-issue.

My one complaint is that you can't jog with it.

Your PDA uses solid-state storage, whereas the full-size iPod has a hard drive (that's why there are 60GB iPods but no 60GB Rios or iPod nanos). If you jostle it enough, you can make it skip.

On a related note, Sony announced a new Walkman yesterday as well.

Icarus,

Microsoft is developing a new operating system that will allow a handheld device to do all those things. Bill Gates is betting that we will ties of having dedicated electronics filling our pockes when one device can do it all including phone, internet, camera, GPS, games and music.

I hope to get an iPod someday. But they're so expensive. So far, the "WANT!" factor hasn't outweighed the cost of the thing.

I did get a Rio Forge 256MB at woot.com for $50 (half price) about a month and a half ago. I like it a lot. [Smile] Previously I used a CD player, and I often couldn't be bothered to change the CD, so often listened to the same one for days. It's nice to have something that can hold more music so there's more of a mix. It's even big enough to hold several episodes of The Signal, which is awesome.

johnsonweed, you misunderstand me. My PocketPC already does all these things. I stated what you quoted in response to fugu, explaining why someone might choose an "inferior" mp3 player--basically, when the mp3 player isn't what you want but just an added benefit.

What I'm really hoping for is someone who can vouch for newegg.com and for Patriot Extreme Performance . . .

Oh, yes. That's scientific.

Did you listen to the exact same tracks, encoded with the same program on the same computer? Did you listen to those tracks with the same pair of headphones? Which iPod did you try, and which iRiver player? Did you try different iPods? How much background noise was there where you were listening? Exactly how much difference in sound quality was there between the players you tested?

True, the iPods may have fewer features than your player. But don't spread ignorance based on extremely limited observations.
