That's just rude. I'll have to remember never to use an outside restroom in a foreign country.

True, most hidden camera things are. But did you notice they sit on them backwards? What’s up with that? And they’re all narrow.

They don't sit on them, they squat over them; they're narrow because positioning your legs closer together is more conducive to good balance.

Apparently it was meant to be funny.

I don't get it either. Apparently they aren't as litigious a society as we are.

The whole squatty bathroom thing would probably turn me off to using it anyway. The concept of the bathroom is amusing, but that particular video wasn't hysterical or anything.

Personally my favorite joke toilets are the ones where it's two way glass, so you can see out, but they can't see in. So it's basically like you're going where everyone can see you but they can't, and it's just disorienting and awkward, but not horribly embaressing and rude.

I can see that it was funny. What was most interesting, though, was the difference in culture. They have shows that they consider funny that we wouldn't even dream of.

Either Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart, I can't remember which, but whenever they want to highlight the differences between American and Japanese culture always shows this video of a dozen girls all sitting with their heads in this room on a platform or something with meat taped to their head and a giant iguana running around the platform. And there's a guy taunting the iguana into chasing after one of the meat headed girls.

Anyone who has MXC knows we have a different sense of humor. Well that isn't totally true, I LOVE watching MXC every now and then, you'd just never see something like that done by Americans (not yet anyway!).

That actually is kind of funny, but I hate those sort of bathrooms anyway... Ugh. Porta potties..

But, yeah, Japanese toilets are like that... Something to consider when I go there one of these days...

Methinks she doth protest too much.

I was just really in pain for those folks. The only time I use a portapotty is when I REALLY need to. A 10-second countdown would pretty much find me in a position where I would not find it convenient to pull my pants back up, for example. Besides empathizing with the victims, I'd also feel very sorry for the person who had to clean those facilities. Obviously, they aren't actually "functional" porta-potties. The "stuff" has to go somewhere, and at least some humans, when frightened and already "full" (so to speak) are going to evacuate their bowels something fierce.

There was the one guy who fell off the contraption that was being pulled and hit his head pretty solidly. I don't know about you, but hitting my head on the floor of a porta-potty is not something they'd be able to compensate me for with a smile and wave.

If they pulled that kind of stunt in TX or FL, lawsuits would be the least of their troubles.

Applicable torts:

False imprisonment
Intentional infliction of emotional distress
Intrusion
Disclosure (maybe)
Negligence (if injury occurs)

I don't think the porta-potty video is very funny at all (mostly because I would be completely horrified if something similar happened to me) but the massage chair video that Mark posted is amusing. I could laugh off something like that.

the massage chair one would still tick me off. And knowing that people have already sat in the thing with little or no covering...ewwwwwwwwwww!

Hey Dag, which law would cover the act of videotaping someone in a locker-room-type environment?

Intrusion and disclosure (if shown to someone), plus intentional infliction of emotional distress if the behavior was shocking and outrageous.

That's based on the common law torts as taught for the multi-state bar exam. Rules will vary significantly by state.

If sound is intercepted, then federal and state wiretapping laws come into play.

Edit: And if they failed to mention you'd just come from a cold pool, maybe defamation. [Evil]

I'm not sure if there's precedent for that - it would be a teste case that would produce a seminal decision.
