They are seriously delicious! I can't get enough of these things. All they need is a touch of salt, and it's heavenly when they are smooth and creamy. Also, unlike cookies, avocados are actually good for me. I want more of them and a nice big bowl of guacamole dip.

Have you watched Alton Brown's "Good Eats" about avocados? He does more than just make guacamole with them; it's quite good.

I agree with you Syn; but they are fattening! (but like you said, if it's cookies vs. avocados, it's a better-for-you kind of fat)

It's healthy fat though. Only 5 grams. i love the texture. I might be craving crazy amounts of potassium and other vitamins because I can't get enough of these smooth lovely things. And chocolate concoctions.

And Syn, you have IBS, right? Avocados are good for your digestive tract. Is that what you meant by good?

Avocados are proof that God loves us. And wants us to eat more California rolls -- which I had for lunch.

I just got back from Costa Rica. Man, I miss those avos. There they call them "aguacate". They are so much better than any you can get in the States. I've lived in Southern Cali, and I know.

I love avocados. They are delicious and nutritious. I don't get good ones here in the UK. Of course, neither do I when I'm Boston. I'm in entirely the wrong place for avocados.
You ought to see some of the Fuerte-style avos in Costa Rica. They're like 80% pit. That's another reason why I like the black-skinned Hass-style.

That last part is important.
No. God likes it when you smash it rustically and add nothing but salt and a little lime or lemon on top, too.
God is very tolerant of onion-lovers, though. But He recognizes that every once in a while the avocado should be enjoyed alone or close to it.

Just a tiny shake of salt for about 3 avocados, rivka. It is a flavor enhancer, and it just... does something wonderful to them.

I taste salt in most commercial baked goods. I don't like salt in most things, and usually taste it where the average American does not.

Yeah, I had thought that you might be particularly sensitive. I'm sure God makes an exception for you knowing that avocados are naturally salty enough for your specialized taste buds.

It's actually a good thing, since I tend to high BP. (Except when pregnant, and then I crave salt all the freakin' time.)

Well, when you touch it with your hands, are your hands itchy?
Sometimes my mouth itches when I eat foods with certain kinds of fibers and such. It's not allergy, it's just a reaction to the feel of the food.

My left finger did. The right didn't.
Perhaps it is the texture. I think the smoother ones don't make me itch, but ones with a different texture seem to.

It sounds like a texture thing to me. If you have hives, rashes, swelling, or trouble breathing, I'd conclude allergy. But just very mild itching and nothing else? Probably not. If you have anything else I mentioned, though, stop eating them for sure.

I don't seem to have hive or rashes and nothing is swelling and my breathing is ok there could be a few sores on my mouth though...
but i don't think it's the avos.

I used to get a similar sensation years ago from avos. I also got it from Brazil nuts...but with the Brazils, it accompanied my throat closing up. Now, though, I'm not allergic to Brazils.

Do you have any pollen allergies? If so, it could be oral allergy syndrome, a type of allergic cross-reaction. I have a whole list of fresh fruits and veggies I can't eat, but my reaction is pretty strong--major itching that will progress from throat to nasal passages, ears, eyes and mouth if I don't stop eating the offending food. From what I've read, I don't think the severity of my reaction is typical.
I'm not sure, but I think I learned about this syndrome here on Hatrack -- I've had it for 30 years, but did any allergist I've been to tell me what it was? Nope, they just said, "hmm, better not eat that anymore."
I miss apples most of all.

It's possible. I also ate other fruit besides the avos. Like a banana and an apple and pear. Grrr I'm trying to eat healthy, and this is what I get? I really don't want to stop eating foods I love.

I hope that's not what it is, maybe just an isolated incident that won't repeat. Because I agree, it's not fair -- I've often wondered if I'd be thinner and healthier if I had that reaction to chocolate and sweets rather than fresh fruits!

Incedently, my throat often itches when I am not eating avocados. That could be that stupid TMJ.

Avocados are definitely one of the things I'm most going to miss about New Zealand. Farmers' markets there have them five (or more) for a dollar. And that's a *New Zealand* dollar (about $.80 U.S.)
Wish I had gotten more invested in avocado oil while I was there, though. Someone offered it as a dip with bruschetta during dinner one night, and it was divine.

Avocado is also good with sugar and lime juice. *smacks lips* And it's also eaten here mixed with sweetened condensed milk. Also good.

Hmm. Maybe the green ones will make me feel less itchy. I think something else could have caused the tongue and mouth itching, but I'm not sure what.
I'm still craving avocados with salt.

Incredible! I never thought of doing that.
Although, I bet avocado ice cream would be awesome.
